Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
The Hyenas can always *feel* when I raise my camera to photograph them. They'll look up, take a few steps back, and run off. When they see me from a different spot, they'll run off again. Sometimes, I'm lucky and quick enough to snap a picture
Species: Spotted or Laughing Hyena (Gevlekte of lachende hyena)
Latin name: Crocuta Crocuta
Originates from Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The female Spotted Hyena has a pseudo-penis, making it hard to determine by looking at it whether it’s a male or female.
…It is the only mammalian species to lack an external vaginal opening.
…It counts as the most social of the Carnivora, meaning that it has the largest group sizes and most complex social behaviors, with a matriarchal hierarchy.

Quick question: I know a great deal about Hyenas, but why is it that some spotted hyena have very thin, lighter fur, and then there are some like this one, who have darker, thicker fur? Is it because they're in captivity, or living in different parts of the world? Or is it photo manipulation and lighting?

Mosty, it's just the individual
I was recently present at a feeding presentation of this very group of Hyenas, and with all 4 of them (there is a 5th one inside, but she's picked on so kept apart for her own sake) so close together you really see their individual appearances really well.
The matriarch has the best looking for - no scarring on the back between the shoulders either - and all the others are her kids (though all adults now). Depending on the season, the fur looks thicker, but overall, there is one that is definitely lighter - he's treated slightly different, so they suspect he might be a male. (Because of the genitals all outwardly looknig the same, they'd need be anesthesized to make sure of their sex.) The others - most likely all girls, a bit heavier-set than the suspected male who's a tad slimmer - are all a bit darker in color, some with broader heads, darker noses, etc.
Of course, lighting form day to day, which camera was used and which settings, also plays a role
Aside from the spotted hyena with a pup in my gallery, all other spotted hyena photos in my gallery are of this specific group so you can see some different looks amongst the individuals

Ah, I've grown fond of hyenas. Choice footage puts the "cute" in "Crocuta."
