Description i've been wanting to do this, but my photography skill is so T^T (sadly inadequate).

so the photos of the progress are grainy, and i was also painting while trying to shoot photos. somewhere in the process i cannot leave my brush to take up the camera.

oh well, i hope it gives an idea.
definitely a full view is required so that the fonts are visible.

a larger view of the painting is here:

please, if you love my cat pie go over to my other account to see the photo of him learning art:

it acts as guidelines because ink painting do not have line sketch before doing coloring.

thx for this walkthrough!
help me to learn new things.. btw, what is rice paper actually? is it good in absorbing water from the brush and the paint? gonna find one..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

moyan In reply to Arachnider [2011-04-13 23:40:28 +0000 UTC]

yes, it's very absorbent and flimsy.
you usually buy them in a roll or in a pack.

moyan In reply to ZymonasYH [2011-04-12 11:47:32 +0000 UTC]

oh, just normal a4 paper. those we use for printing document.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZymonasYH In reply to moyan [2011-04-12 12:23:41 +0000 UTC]

hmm... but when A4 got wet, wouldn't it wrinkles?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

moyan In reply to ZymonasYH [2011-04-12 12:35:03 +0000 UTC]

rice paper will wrinkle, a4 will wrinkle.
this is the norm for chinese ink painting technique because we do not pre-stretch the paper before painting like the regular watercolor method.
the painting will only be completely flat after you sent it to a professional frame maker to be framed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZymonasYH In reply to moyan [2011-04-12 12:43:46 +0000 UTC]

so the wrinkles are what made the uneven colouring effect for background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

moyan In reply to ZymonasYH [2011-04-12 12:55:09 +0000 UTC]

partly, it's also due to the contact between the a4 and the rice paper. water will flow behind the rice paper, you see.
if you are not putting a reference guide behind like i did (that is only my own personal method, my teacher in the past never taught me that, hehe), the contact between the lint cloth and the rice paper will also affect the flow of the ink.

whichever way you do it, the uneven blotches will stay after the painting is stretched and framed.

that's why i mentioned that the paint will paint itself.
