I saw nothing wrong with the one with your characters in it. They convey the mood of the piece very well, and put identifiable faces to the story. I don't hate anime, but I find it a bit overused, particularly with giant mecha. That being said, your style gives more a sense of stylized realism than the over-the-top anime style some people use. It looks really good, and works well in the universe you've made.
Ah well. Haters gon' hate, and you can't please everyone.

Moving to this piece, it's really awesome. The mechs look fantastic, the environment serves as a great war-torn backdrop, and the lighting effects, oh sweet baby jesus the lighting effects. Even without the people, the composition still works pretty well, and all the little details on each mech make the piece absolutely stunning.
