Description An gothic Necromancer.
I took my influences mainly from wonderfuly rich background of the Warhammer table top wargame, which is nice and uncomopromisingly dark and moody.
I always thought it unlikely that necromancers (in their robes and being old, frail bent over figures) would dig up their corpses and thought the idea of zombies clawing out of the ground a bit to silly, so i portrayed him magicking his quarry from the ground...

always wanted to make one of these guys...

Citadel Colours paints and inks,
Rotring ink fineliners
sketch/done in grafite pencil underneath original painting
on paper
colors tweaked in photoshop

please let me know what you think..

I find this an impressive piece of work
that may be though, because i don't understand the mediums you have used
even so if i knew how to use them myself i'm sure i'd still find this a great piece
one thing i might say about balance of the picture,
it might just be me,
but I think the necromancers head looks a bit too small in comparison to his rather large bulky looking clothes.

but other than that i find the colours work really well and the sense of the body actually being pulled out of the ground has been achieved really nicely,
fave
and keep up the good work,

cheers Gazzah,

thanks for the lovely comments, yer right about the head ofcourse. Anatomy was never my best point, and in 2-3 years since i've made this I have improved slighty (a wee bit ).

as for the medium, with all the digital stuff nowadays, its no wonder. I feel slighty old and out of sync slugging it out with paint (and that at the tender age of 25). I do enjoy a fair bitb of pencil and digital work as well, but I always come back to acrylic.

thanks again!

ah, thanks for your reply Nick
always nice to have a chat with someone

i was going to ask if i may see your improvements , but i've just realised, they are probably going to be in your gallery somewhere,
so i will make sure to take another look through later on.

as for the technology, i think art should be made with the tradtional materials, i never was a man for technology ( I say that i'm still only 15)
but yeah i think the digital art is less impressive than traditional,
even though you may be able to create some incredible pieces of art i think you can't capture the artists true personality through digital art,

well that's just me
nice talking with you Nick

You know...i was just flopping around from picture to picture and stumbled upon this, while the previous picture i clicked on was was a stupid FMA icon with 800+ favs, and my mind just like...melted...just from the sheer difference in quality and actual talent. I find it difficult to understand why such a picture doesn't have more favs or even comments, because i feel that this picture really does deserve them. You have a great strong lightsource with beautiful bright, yet at the same time subtle colors. The warm grey with the baby blue gives a nice contrast and separation. The only thing I can really say is off in this picture is the composition. It's not bad or anything, just slightly unbalanced. I think it might be the headstone's equivalance to the necromancer. If it was a bit shorter the picture would seem more balanced. regardless, I'm still faving it. It's well deserved.

Thank you DeaDNeSS,

I think comments, favs, deviations and talent have little to do with each other, to a certain extent. This is my second page, on tyhe first I invested much more time in getting to know people and such, which resulted in way more favs and comments. Thats just the way it is. No problem.
I also think you are right with your comment on composition, its just one of those things that can get when you're several hours in to the painting process and lose perspective... Should have stuck to the sketch..

thanx again for all the nice things you said,

Nick

Fantastic. I find it very difficult to mix inkpen and paint, so this is doubly impressive.

Heya Greyraven,

thank you for the nice comment.
Maybe the word "painting" is something of a misnomer when corceirining my work. Its mosly very thin layers or washes and only the highlights have any substance to them, this makes drawing my lines a lot easier as I have a very smooth surface to work on.

like your black and white work.

Nick
