Description God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not meant to be. So he put his arms around you, and whispered come with me. With tearful eyes we watched you, as we saw you pass away. Although we love you deeply, we could not make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best.

Maybe it's because I'm biased, or maybe it's because I've experienced the loss of a friend on deployment, but I find this picture absolutely deep and awe-inspiring. In addition to the words that went along with it, invoked tears of sadness as old questions that came from deployment came back and haunted me, this one being the most prevalent:

"Why did I come back home and Jake didn't?"

Then, there was the beautiful answer sitting at the bottom of an already breath-taking picture:

"... he only takes the best."

Mr. Merzlak, I know not what force drew me to this picture on the eve of me mourning my friend on the day of his burial, but I do know that the power of your words is something not found that often in this day and age.

Your ability to take breathtaking photos and combine them with equally breathtaking words is not just something to be praised, but something to aspire to.

God be with you in your future endeavors.

Looks like it came straight from a movie. It reminded me why I always looked up to the soldiers of the U.S. military as heros. "From dust we are made and to dust we shall return." That saying rings especially true for these guys.

This picture makes me just as proud as the time we had a flood over here. I got to live my dream of serving a long with these guys when I helping fill out sandbags.

I could try to explain the picture, but what it says can't be repeated in any known language. Although it can be felt by anyone.

Keep it going. We need more stuff like this to be proud of in this day in age in America.

Good impact reminding us of all the ones risking their lives for our freedom, to make sure we can sleep soundly at night, 5 stars. I assume vision is something along the lines of what the message they were trying to tell you is. ive seen a couple of "Soldiers die" so I gave that 1/2 a star less. Ive seen several similar close-ups of uniforms. Not enough of them in my opinion. 4 stars. The angle is good, nice touch with the items clearly visible. headgear in back but slightly blurry says to me "I may be gone, but not forgotten." 5 stars. Overall 5 stars in my opinion.

The vision is terrific. The picture really pops out. The warm effect the candles give it adds a very nice touch. The badges and pins are placed such that they do not distract from one another, but are still all noticeable. The image is soft and peaceful looking. Job well done on vision. Technique as well, seeing as the lighting is terrific.
The originality strikes me, as well as the impact. It's really nice to see artwork honoring soldiers, whether you knew one personally or not. It makes me proud to see people honoring their country, and they definitely need more recognition.
Overall, the beauty and message behind this image is beautiful. Very well done, definitely deserves a favorite.

There's a a lot of great ,military action photos around but this one has a poignancy that makes you remember that for all the excitement and adrenalin the military offers, there's always the darker side we try to forget.

Well done!

i think the piece is more about God only taking the best, not as much about the military part. both are heavy, heavy topics, and i liked the poetry, not too flashy, not too long, just truth.

I love the shadows coming off of the candle - it gives the right amount of light and emotion in the picture. As you couple that with your words, it is simply beautiful. Too often do we go day by day taking things for granted and not pausing to consider what is around us.

There is no one more honorable than the proud men and women who defend this country and make sure we get to live the lives we do. I'm proud to say I tried to join but didn't make it through basic training. Not many people can say they even made the attempt.

You know... when I goto my school, i do everything Im told... I like that we pay our respects to our men and woman of the military, and law enforcement, but i see people that wont stand for the pledge or even say it. Now i think, if you wont even stand or repeat a few words for the people that gave their life's and their freedom just so you can wake up in the morning feeling your safe in your country... Then you have lost my respect and hopefully many others, because you don't deserve that respect...not... one... bit...

but that's just me...
To all the people that served... thank you...

Because people don't see the pledge of allegiance as an act of respect... they see such an act as something the along the lines of jingoism. I see the reciting of the pledge of allegiance as an act of respect... not blind jingoism. It's sad that people are too "clever" or "intelligent" to view it as such...

We all have patriotism inside of us, its just the one who take it to far. and get blinded by the thing that are the truth. I love America all of its people, but if you think about it... America did some messed up stuff in the past, and are still doing it today.

No nation is perfect. I've traveled around the world and saw the screwed up things the other nations were capable of. From this experience, I can safely say that we have it rather good here in the U.S. and are thankful that it is as such.
