Lots of tests and improvisation! I always try to do something as fluid as possible. On this one I just wanted to create something around the mandala on the center. So I'm drawing lines and then "What can I add next to it?"
Dots and over little patterns (There are not a lot of patterns, I wanted something light) are great to do shadows or to have a good balance between black and white

How about symmetry? What did you do to make both sides look so even? Any specific technique or did you just do it by eye?

For the symmetry I search for the center of the paper, then I draw 1x1cm squares with a pencil. It helps a lot for symmetry! Then everything I do one a side, I try to do the same on the other side
