Description
If you've been with me since the Schneider Tunes days, you may know I have a... complicated history with this obscure TV show by Hanna-Barbera. From 2019 to 2020, I made a nearly shot-for-shot remake of the horror film adaptation but with Five Nights at Freddy's characters, I did a few dubs of any media featuring them, and most infamously, I tried to do my own Banana Splits series but ended up cancelling it because being known primarily for doing stuff with these guys and FNAF drove me fucking insane.
Now it's 2024, and while I still find most of my stuff from three years ago to be cringe and absolute shit, I've mellowed out a bit and kinda appreciate at least the fun I had while making my old ST content. As for the Banana Splits themselves, I must confess I was not really that big of a fan of them to begin with. First time I saw them was when I was five and caught a few glimpses of a music video on TV, and much like a lot of kids who have a phobia over mascot characters, I was creeped out by both the Splits' costumes and their theme song, and I often told my mom to turn it off. Flash over to 2019 when the horror movie came out, and I was fascinated they actually portrayed these big dumb animals I was afraid of as murderous monsters. Nowadays I find the film to be dull and uninteresting, but back then, it was a big surprise for me. I don't have much to say on the original show as I've only ever watched a few clips and that Hocus Pocus TV film from 1972, but from what I've seen, it's mostly just a bunch of guys in suits jumping, tripping over each other, and delivering corny jokes only the laugh track and HB fans would genuinely find funny, and the Hocus Pocus movie is one of the lamest, most boring pieces of dogshit I had to sit through.
But enough rambling on about my relationship with the Banana Splits, let's talk about the drawing itself.
I attempted to stay close to how this 60s furry band looked in the show, while of course adding my own flare to them.
Fleegle's the most different out of all of them. He still has his tongue out, his red bowtie, his snazzy sneakers, and the zig-zaggy strings of hair on his head, but I gave him a lime green jacket as a stand in for that weird fur-shirt he had in the original design.
Bingo looks practically the same as he was in Season 1, even down to his belly being the color of his skin rather than the more familiar white from 2008 onwards. Although, I did shave his hands to make them hairless like his feet. His vest is also not all that detailed as I have literally no idea how to do those swirly lines on it correctly.
Drooper wasn't changed much either. In fact he looks way more accurate here than he did in my older drawings from 2020 (he had no glasses to be precise). The only notable difference is that his tail tip is brown instead of yellow, which isn't much of a big deal as it was like that in Hocus Pocus if I recall.
Lastly, Snorky. He's definitely the closest to his original look (or, more specifically, his Season 2 hairless look); the glasses, the vest, the ears, it's all pretty top notch. A very small change would maybe be the eyebrows, but it's still very faithful.
Anyway, so yeah, this was my first ever Banana Splits drawing I made in four years. And I must say, it may be the best I've ever done with these guys period. Also, this doesn't mean I'm gonna exploit it to death again like I did in the past. This is just a one-off thing I wanted to do for fun, nothing else.
