Description Strolling along Jardim da Cordoaria in the early Autumn sunlight and sunshine. Relaxed but melancholic … something slightly beyond the end of a summer. People sit and relax while others play music in the park.

Previously we sat outside the Porto & Vírgula Restaurant with a glass of Vino Verde. Youths gathered spontaneously to practice dance moves on the nearby bandstand. Meanwhile me and Lucian discussed the evolution of human awareness of the nature of the World. From biblical stories, through antediluvian floods, Lamarckian theory of acquired evolution, Hutton's law of Uniformitarianism requiring huge periods of time, and Cuvier's theories of cataclysmic extinction and re-creation to explain the fossil remains of past life.

A hot sunny afternoon that required us to seek shade.

There are plenty of people around, some of them tourists. Mostly Portuguese and Spanish ... with a sprinkling of young Dutch tourists.

It is very relaxed in Porto with most bars and cafe open and people eating, drinking, and chatting. You have to wear a mask in shops and make the gesture of wearing a mask when entering a restaurant or cafe ... before taking it off to eat. Life is relaxed and pleasant, although there is an underlying melancholic atmosphere as if everyone knows this period of normality will soon end.

The city itself is much cleaner than Dublin. No litter, few discarded face masks, and nice architecture. The aimless army of homelessness and addiction is not a constant occupying presence as it is within Dublin.
