The meaning of "life" is that a given thing has the following six traits:  [1] energy, matter, and organization, [2] homeostasis---it tries to maintain a balance with its surrounding environment, [3] interdependence with other living things, [4] development over time, e.g. growth, [5] reproduction, and finally [6] evolution, i.e. the previous generation isn't necessarily identical to the current one.  Anything that meets those six criteria is "life".

...Or did you mean something more along the lines of "The universe is the masterpiece artistic project of an all-wise Supreme Being"?

The Earth is a huge rock. The stellar dust composed both living creatures and planets alike; therefore we all are rocks. Everything is stone; there are pebbles and boulders, but we are nothing but stone in the end.
