Description "Yeah... yeah, I knew this wise ass marine, Jimmy Vega - sounds like a pole-dancer on Omega - always got on my nerves. But the kid was alright. Had guts when it counted."

Firstly, I apologize that our camera isn't that spectacular! We were shooting with the lights lowered to try and pick up the suit's lights better. But here's Garrus, mask and all. The pose just reminded me so much of that scene with him and Vega trying to one-up each other's stories! More pictures to come soon, after Phoenix Comicon.

There's a couple things I didn't get to (stupid time!), but he's 99% complete - good enough to wear to the show! His jaw moves with my own, and all the lights are now installed and working. The armor is pretty comfortable, though warm, as you can imagine! Of course the biggest convention in Phoenix has to be during the summer, hah.

Edit - Thank you guys so much for all the love and compliments! I really appreciate it! I'm going to be away for Phoenix Comicon for a few days, but I will answer everyone when I get back.

Want to see how I made the costume? I've got a full set of blog posts on my website!

I died when I found this, partially because I didn't think anything out there as good as this existed, and partially because I probably won't ever have the skill or time to make something like this. You are extraordinarily talented, and I am in awe of your skills.

I am currently having a buddy of mine help me with a cosplay of Garrus. Do you have any tips for a fellow future Garrus cosplayer as far asthe paint goes? I also know I will probably have problems with the face, as both time and money are an issue for me. I'm making the costume mainly of cardboard, so...quality issues to say the least. :/ (Also, yes, I did look at Red Neblua Studios. But wouldn't paining be different?)

And honestly, if I saw you at a convention, I would probably just stand there and gape. Or take eleventy gazillion pictures. Or both.
*mind blown*

Hello, and thank you for the kind words! I found myself completely fascinated by turians, and Garrus in particular, when I played through ME. I hadn't done a full costume for a while, but he made me want to get back into it. A little inspiration never hurts.

Regarding painting - actually, the types of paints I used for mine would probably work better on cardboard than they do on latex. The only reason I got away with using acrylics on latex was because I used a backing on my mask to make it less flexible than usual. (It doesn't flex like a storebought latex mask does.) Craft acrylics are meant to be used on porous, non-flexible materials like ceramic or paper, so they should be ideal to use on cardboard. You might want to use a primer or gesso on it first, just to give you a good base color to start with, but after that, the painting tips on my blog should work just fine for you.

Best of luck! I would love to see what you guys create!

Thank you for your response and the painting tips! I am planning on posting pics of our project here once we get started.
Unfortunately I am allergic to latex, so any kind of latexΒ  mask tends not to get along well with me. :/

It's SO COOL to be able to talk to you. Seriously. I love your cosplays, especially Garrus, and at the same time inspired and intimidated by the level of detail you went into. So you are a bit of a celebrity in my mind, and I would LOVE to see you at Comic-con sometime.
Speaking of which, how do you reccomend storing costume pieces so they don't get damaged?

Apologies for taking a couple of days to reply; I was prepping for a convention last week - busy, busy! Nice to be able to relax now - at least for a week or so!

The Garrus mask I made originally was latex, but the later turian masks I've been doing are made from resin. There's a bit of cost and learning curve to working with it, but at least it avoids the allergy problems many people have with latex, and I find it much easier to work with, too.

As far as storing costume pieces, it's best to get a tote or box to fit them in so they don't get dusty, and make sure to keep them out of direct sunlight. I do cheat a little bit with Garrus, though; I've got the carapace and mask set up on a stand in the living room. Makes a great conversation piece when people visit!

I'm in a similar predicament with school. X1000000 things to get caught up on/study/do.....

And a million people asked to get their picture taken with you....Was it amazing? I'd like to go to a convention sometime, but I've never been.

Thanks!...Wow, I bet that would be a good conversation piece. I can only imagine some of the reactions you get out of people. If I had a costume like that displayed in a public place, my m&d would probably give me some VERY strange looks....and promptly refuse to come back. XD
What's the strangest question yo have ever gotten asked when someone walks in and sees it?

MsRedNebula In reply to Kuwashiifangirl [2014-11-16 16:17:01 +0000 UTC]

It's quite something walking around at conventions all suited up. In 2013, I was the only Garrus and there were just a handful of Mass Effect cosplayers locally (we do have a couple of pretty kick-ass Shepards, though!). I could barely move though the hall! The response was just awe-inspiring... I knew I wanted to suit up as Garrus, but I didn't expect just how excited people would be to see him.

And about keeping part of the suit in the living room... Well, the good thing is, most of my friends are as strange as my husband and I, so the conversations usually go more like, "GARRUS! *runs over to pet the costume*" :3

Kuwashiifangirl In reply to MsRedNebula [2014-11-16 23:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Because people love Garrus. And your costume is the best i've ever seen. By the way, I saw the pic of you going into the pizza place. The look the server is giving you is so funny. He's like wut....? XD

Lol. I'd probably do that if one of my friends had a cool Garrus costume....

It's mostly the face and feet I have questions about, and on that note, do you have Any tips on how to do the feet?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MsRedNebula In reply to Kuwashiifangirl [2014-11-17 17:31:54 +0000 UTC]

Ehhh, the feet! I've done two different versions, and I'm still not happy with them. My best advice is to make sure they're comfortable! My first set were built around a pair of wedge heels... bad idea. They were very uncomfortable after the first hour or so, and I ended up with (thankfully temporary) nerve damage to several toes on both feet from them! My second pair are simply wrap-arounds that fit over tennis shoes. Not perfect, but I can spend a lot of time in them comfortably. I want to do something a bit more elaborate when I have time, but comfort is now my top priority when it comes to my toesies!

Sorry it took me so long to respond...it's closing in on finals week, so I have about a million things I have to get done. (much rather go to a convention, trust me).

Thanks! Would you mind sending me a pic so I can get an idea?

would you mind sharing what kind of materials or processes you used to make this, please? I am just getting into cosplaying and I want to make face masks, full head masks and helmets but I have no idea how?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MsRedNebula In reply to Ricehatpunk [2014-04-12 20:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Sure! I actually have a series of blogs on my website with photos of how I made pretty much the whole thing, all linked from this page:Β www.rednebulastudios.com/?page… Β Basically, I sculpt the original piece in oil-based clay, make a plaster mold of it, and cast it in latex. I've since started making turian masks using a silicone mold and casting them in resin, as seen here:Β www.rednebulastudios.com/?page… The armor is made from a combination of different types of closed-cell foam (EVA and craft foam, along with some pieces from a yoga mat for the larger carapace). A lot of people make armor and helms from foam, so that might be a better place to start looking if you're not used to working with oil-based clay. It can have a bit of a learning curve, but is a lot of fun to work with!

I hope that helps. I'm happy to answer questions too.
