Brief History: Andrew comes from a long line of re'em, the massive unicorn subspecies being rather reclusive, keeping mostly to their ancestral lands in the Middle East. Andy's family was the same; traditional and tight knit, living on a small farm in the Zagros mountains. Born a twin, as was common for his species, he got all the adventurous genes while his sister, Adah, preferred to stay at home and craft. He loved his family and his simple life, filling his need to wander by exploring the region at will (as long as he returned home with something useful and interesting stories)
However, again as tradition dictated, he was betrothed from birth to a nearby family's daughter. As they grew older and were encouraged to spend time together, it became clear they were oil and water. Andy was kind but blunt and generous to a fault. Dinah disliked his brand of... honesty... and belittled him for being a fool, tying him down to home, not as willing to let him explore and be away from her influence. Beyond this more normal brand of toxicity though, Dinah adhered to a form of neo traditionalism that read the old stories from the Bible and took them to be true rather than metaphor. Basically a cult within the re'em community, it believed that adhering to those stories would bring back their supposed strength of old and favor with God. Many of these stories were harmless, but the ones that weren't... weren't.
After Adah had been married to her betrothed and moved away, Andy was encouraged to move Dinah in with the family. It was expected by his parents they would take over their little farm and take care of them as they had taken care of Andrew and Adah, but Dinah had other plans. When Andy was away on one of his, now rare, excursions into the hills, the zealot murdered his parents in accordance with the stories of old. Upon his return she tried to explain, moving in on him to tie him down. "Only one pair of re'em can exist in an area at a time. Once we have our children we'll do the same."
Terrified and distraught the poor man ran. He went to Adah first, warning her of Dinah's actions, sobbing and trying to convince them to stay safe. Thankfully his sister's new husband was aware of the beliefs espoused by that section of the community and took action, calling on his own family for aid. There was no police force or true justice system in place, in the small, spread out community however, so by the time they arrived, Dinah was already gone. None of her friends claimed to know where she was and the members who held to the old beliefs weren't necessarily tracked... so she remains at large.
Now with only an empty farm haunted by memories to go back to, Adah offered to let her brother live with them. Andy declined; first because he didn't want to put them in danger with his crazy ex still around, and second because this was his chance to get away. He walked to the nearest airport with what little he owned and hasn't been back, instead choosing to live his best life. He came to the West Coast for the mountains and Shadewood for the experience. Hopefully those experiences are good ones!
Other/Fun Facts:
- the re'em is the biblical unicorn, though historians say it was more likely an extinct form of auroch or wooly rhino.
- The re'em is said to have been so massive it swam during the flood with only its nose on the arc, thus Andy is huge, standing at 7'6" in his human form and even taller in his unicorn one.
- Andy prefers to be outside, hiking and exploring. He'd rather sleep in a tent than a house sometimes.
