Name Origin: Hine-nui-te-pō is a Māori goddess of the underworld. Her title there is the "Great Woman of Night" and she works to shepherd the souls of men onto the next part of their journey after death. Her background is a tragic one as she only flees to the underworld after being unknowingly seduced by her own father and together they father mankind. She refuses to return to him, but asks that he take care of them in the light, while she will take care of them when they die. She is also associated with sunsets and appears in some stories of Maui as the cause of his death.
