I use just a wood sealer, there's soooo many different brands you can buy, all of which you can find in the paint aisle of any hardware store. 
For this box, I used a wood sealer by Varathane and the can says "Diamond wood finish." 
You gotta watch though and make sure the sealer you use says "Non-yellowing" or something along those lines, cause it can be a real bitch when you work so hard on something and then you go to finish and this yellow cloud ruins your image. Also, make sure if you have an outline somewhere, that it isnt in ink or sharpie cause the outline will run and it will make you cry.

Sorry, if I rambled on but yeah, Varathane Wood Finish! I also have just started to use a product called Krylon acrylic crystal clear.
