My Christmas present came the day after Christmas - hundreds of Northern Gannets were hunting off of the jetty at Barnegat. This is a bird that I've been wanting to get photos of; I've only ever seen them through scopes from far away since this is a sea bird. A few came close to us for some nice photo ops - this one floated near us and took off at the right moment.Barnegat Light, New Jersey

Very pretty! Wonderful capture in perfect moment. I love how the wings are spread and that the splashes of water are perfectly frozen. I think it might look a bit better if it was more saturated or if you bumped the contrast a bit more. It would add more dynamics. Still, I like it very much and I think I spent 5 minutes enjoying every little detail

Thank you for the recommendations! I didn't want to lay on contrast too much because the whites/blacks lost detail when I did. Not sure what the happy medium would be for this photo.

That's right, it may be very tricky, especially with the white parts. Maybe if you made the background a bit more blue this would make the white bird stand out more? I'm not sure how much good it would do while you still keep it looking natural but maybe it's worth trying if you have some spare time.

Thank you! I was lucky that he decided to take off while I was photographing him. It wasn't because of my though - I was high up on a platform
