Admission of influences

No one, exists in a vacuum, the concept of education and knowledge is based upon learning what others already know. Sometimes, its application occurs from absorbing information, sometimes, it occurs by having a meaningful discourse with someone. Their ideas, and influences can greatly affect our thoughts on a topic, including artistic pursuits.

Such is the case here.. I would like to think the style, image and emotion conveyed are representative of me, and what I do, but it is also fair to say that much of this shot came from acquired knowledge, absorption of information from others, and one night of great conversation last February, a night that had a profound influence on me, and one I know will change what and how I do things for years to come. I owe a few people for this photo really, so here they are:

Reven , for being an incredible subject in trying conditions..

Lela , for being a great assistant, lookout, and getaway driver.

D. Brian Nelson , for blowing my mind with his night photography some time back.

Chip Willis , for his incredible ability to capture mood, feeling and the person, with something as simple as body posture. “Don’t be afraid to loose the eyes”, and Most importantly, the famous quote “Shoot more, film’s cheap”.

James Graham , for saying “Ilford Delta 3200 sucks, you should try Fuji Neopan 1600”. (Paraphrased, I was quite intoxicated when he said it, I am sure it was delivered with more panache, but that was the gist of it.)

I am sure there are others, that somehow subtly influenced what I did when I composed the shot, put my eye to the camera and had at it.. but these, are all things I referenced in my mind while shooting, and working in the darkroom for this one..

And there’s more to come from this evening.

There’s more to this story too, and my influence, and where I was trying to go with this one. If you care to hear about it, drop me an email.

All creation is influenced to some degree, of that, I have no doubt, we build upon what others have done, and make our own, hopefully different, and true to ourself, if not better then those that lend their thoughts to us.

I believe there is a fine line, between incorporation of their thoughts into your being, and mimicry. I believe, that admission and acknowledgement of those that have an influence upon you, is in some ways a thanks for what they have given you. And most importantly, I did not create this image in a vacuum, I am a sum of those influences that have affected me.

To not admit so, would be lying to myself ,something I believe no one should be good at.
