It's interesting how things don't appear to be quite perfect here.. like the flies add a sense of reality to things. The atmosphere is quite profound, and with the way it's quite dark, it adds a more sombre tone to things.
As for the horse.. not too sure what to think about the colour of the mouth and all? =/
Really nice portrait, though. I like the slight unfocused background, and the way you've centred it all. There is a good sense of balance and composition here.

Thank you! I was quite taken aback when I saw the flies too. He shook them off once or twice but they just went back to their respective places. A more "realistic" version to country life I would say.
