You snorted, reaching forward across the dark stained table for your beer glass. "Well, they do say that criminals always return to the scene of the crime."

At first Cody looked almost insulted, but then he smiled, letting out that deep belly laugh that you had learned to love so much. You flushed slightly and looked at him more closely; trying to ignore the murderous glare you were receiving from his koala. That furry little bastard had it in for you, you just knew it. But, for now at least, you could ignore him; all that you were focused on was Cody. The glint in his deep forest green eyes, the way his wild chocolate brown hair bounced slightly with each laugh, in a way that just made you want to run your hands through it, to toy with the strands that always refused to behave, defiant to all attempts to control them, the plaster covering the sun-kissed skin of his nose bridge. You sighed lightly, hoping that he wouldn't notice how closely you were looking at him. Eventually, he stopped laughing and replied to you.

"[Name], mate, much as I like that explanation, I don't think that's it."

You smirked, took a sip of the beer and placed your glass back down, "So why did you come over to 'Ye Olde Britain' for uni then?"

Cody looked mystified, leaning forward on his hands, trying hard to filter through his brain to find the answer. "I don't know", he said, taking his weight off his hands and leaning back against the hard wooden bench. "I really don't know." You lurched forward to take another glug of beer. "But I think a better question would be why you stayed here."

You immediately stopped, your hand floating in midair. "Eh?"

"Why did you stay here?"

Realising how much of a twat you looked, you placed your hand down on the table and tried to think of something reasonably clever to say. "Well", you began, "My girlfriend was coming to this university, and it was apparently good for the course I wanted to take." You went quiet towards the end; around three months into your life at uni, your girlfriend had broken up with you. It hadn't been an exceptionally painful break, but you were still pissed at her for texting you about it instead of talking to you. And she'd done it just when you thought things were going so well. Sighing inwardly, you tried to think of something else to talk about. And, lo and behold, you did and smirked, a wide grin covering your face. "And besides, I needed to be somewhere where I could rush home if mum forgot how to text or broke her computer or killed the dog, or something."

Cody laughed again, making a few people propped up at the bar turn around to see what was going on. After staring at him for about a minute, they must have concluded he was just a madman, and turned back to their pints. Relived you weren't attracting that much attention any more, you murmured something under your breath, "Y'know, it's really not that funny."

He stopped his belly laugh, but you could tell he was struggling to keep it in, a chuckle escaping every now and then. "Sorry mate."

You shrugged, "It's fine really." Trying to change the subject, you decided to bring the conversation back to Cody. You tipped your chair backwards onto two legs. "How's Alice?"

Alice was Cody's long term girlfriend; studious, mature and with one hell of a temper; the complete opposite of him. You'd known of her existence almost as long as you'd known Cody and, despite your initial decision to hate her on principle, you couldn't help but like the snarky, tea sipping lady when you finally met her, at a gathering down on the campus. You'd have liked her even more if the first thing she'd done after Cody introduced you wasn't to comment on your height though. But the two of you got along, going from begrudgingly tolerating each other's existence to being good friends, sometimes going out for drinks together. I mean sure, you liked Cody. Hell, you really liked him. But, after three years, you'd pretty much figured out you had no chance in hell. And if being with Alice made Cody happy, well, you would just have to accept that.

"We broke up this week."

You almost fell off your chair. "Wait, what?"

Cody waited until you'd regained your balance before replying. "On Monday. We talked and decided it just wasn't working. It was a clean break", he said, the last line added hastily, as he saw your glare, as if he was trying to convince you that you didn't need to avenge his heartbreak. You were already speechless and, noticing that your jaw had dropped, closed your mouth. He smiled, but you noticed it didn't reach his eyes. "So I guess that makes us both singletons now."

You donned a fake smile and nodded.

"You doing anything Friday?"

Again, your eyes widened. You weren't doing anything then, but the question had caught you of guard. Stuttering slightly, you answered, reaching for the glass once more as you saw the death glare the grey furry demon was giving you. You barely heard what Cody said, just nodding ever so often.

"So you'll be there at six?"

You pulled yourself back into consciousness. "Sorry, could you repeat that."

You were beginning to think Cody had an endless temper because he did so without complaint. The plan was to meet outside the cinema downtown at six, to see that new film the two of you had expressed interest in, to start celebrating your singledom. You mentally jotted it down and said you'd be there. He smiled, standing up and turning to leave. "Ok then, it's a date."

You flushed, barely noticing him leave. And even when he did, his words were still ringing in your eyes. But then better sense got a hold of you, bringing you back down to earth. There was no way he could have meant it that way.
