There is nothing stopping you from costuming your little hearts out, especially now that everything's been cleared up - and you're fine if you Upd8 cosplayed it before the fact too (I remember seeing at least one!). I drew this a little while ago- like, in November I think?- and it's based off of a sketch done by .
Basically. We have our insane little Steampunk Felt thread on the fora, and when the Bec Noir revelation came about we were dorks and immediately theorized that Bec Noir was Lord English (which I now want to be untrue so that English can be a Chaotic Good Guy) and then Ruka drew a sketch of a theoretical 'final form' for English.
Basically, in this AU, this English (who is a single reflected facet of the full Lord English) is gallivanting around Earth because he has a limited amount of time to hang around in that universe, and he wants to have more time. As such, he starts creating the Felt as prototypes for his 'key,' who is Snowman- his ticket back into the universe.
In any case, as he uses up more and more of his time in this universe, he starts to shift from being nearly-human to being... well, an unnatural mix of Bec Noir and human. This is what he looks like in his last few days in the universe. And no, he is not happy about it.
On another note, fuck yes I love his wings. I used the Dirty Roots brush set from Brusheezy.com. Holy fuck they are so wonderful.

Are you fucking kidding me? You made fanart of a homestuck character and you act like you fucking need to give permission for the creator of the series to use it? Fuck you. But, back on the topic of what you're saying she does need to give permission because this is an original design and drawing by Nakki and her friend(s) that helped in it's creation. Fanart or not, Lord English as an anime character never was in the story so that doesn't make it Hussie's property to use in the first place. In Lieman's terms, Hussie using this without permission is illegal by ownership laws.

While IronicParticle is being far too harsh about his point, he is correct. From a legal standpoint, an author may alter and draw their legal character in any form or fashion as long as it remains that character, including redesigns that are heavily based off of fan made content, or even a near exact copy of said content, without any legal repercussions. The only time it would have been illegal would be if this exact image was used in Homestuck. As it stands, the version in the comic, aside being protected by Hussie's right to use his character, is a purposefully shitty version of this image, and as such is protected under the laws of parody.Β
However, nearly all of this is moot since this art is posted on a public forum of art, meaning derivative works based on this are legal in all contexts and a natural extension of it's existence here.

actually Hussie does have copyrights for homestuck and its characters and he once publicly said that he does not want people to profit from homestuck merchandise that they made themselves. so there's that. but this isn't really about what you were argueing about. so nevermind.

I don't care, I believe it's awesome, 4 years ago, I didn't have a clue how to do anything like this. If effort was put into it, it's good to me. Art wouldn't be good without any effort. This isn't terrible, because they tried. There are so many others that could be considered "bad", and honestly, this is pretty damn good for how long ago it was made.
It's a thing with artists, plus you can get into trouble if you don't credit and steal things. Clearly the artist cares about their work. Is that a bad thing? Β No, I know lots of people who do the same, and feel the same.Β
I guess because it's something new? He's never really done that,and they got excited. I don't get all the hype, but yeah, it's cool he did that, it's nice to have fan's art get put into comic.

except this person wasnt saying "oc/dont steal" they say in here that lord english is hussies, but this was their fan design before the official design was released. this has nothing to do with ocs, its only the design and the issue that hussie didnt mention using their design to them beforehand. its important to credit where you get things, like fan art inspired by your own creation in this case. creating fan art is not ripping off someones work, and the idea that a fanartists work could be featured in canon is amazing. however, even the original author of a work should ask before knowingly using fanart in their work. its good that hussie credited nakki, whether its fanart or not.

omg, you completely miss the point here. It doesn't matter how much of this art can be attributed to whom and all this semi-legal imbecilic nonsense doesn't consern me. I'm not saying NakkiStiltz isn't allowed to demand featuring her or demanding apologies. Quite the opposite. But only because you can - doesn't mean you absolutely should. Like every self-sufficient community you Devianarters have developed some set of rules and taboos and everybody here follow them without thinking twice (i.snag.gy/kdu77.jpg ). Like this anal fixation on copyrights and featuring. Again I'm not saying the very Idea of preserving your copyrights is bad and must be abolished. Nothing like that. But the way some people sometimes react and loose their shit over it, is just painful to witness.
And in some cases it becomes a true farce. Hussie is not your everyday DA-fag - you can't expect from him abide all your internal rules, just like you can't expect a foreigner follow all the rules of your culture. It certainly would be very nice and considerate of him if he would, but if he fail to and you go full federal on him - you will be making a huge asshole of yourself. And the Irony is - this whole thing happened when Caliburn reached a new Asshole-tier on his Assholedder - Presumptuous DeviantArt Fag.
In this particular case it gets really nonsensical. Demanding apologies from an original author for ripoff of your ripoff of his work is like beating a mother with her own child. Hussie incorporates numerous references and parodies of many things but you can't really expect him to feuture the entire cast of Con Air or Earthbound on his credits page. The same goes for fanmade stuff since Homestuck in it's original form was heavily reader-driven. And even as Hussie asumed full control over the story only direct contributors, like musicians or artists who made art for some [S]'s are featured. Take Pantskat/Righteus Leggings thing - it was spotted by someone and numerous fanarts were made on DA and Tumblr and later Hussie incorporated it in the canon. And nobody was historical about how Hussie must apologize or shit. Why? Because the one who "created" Pantskat wasn't so full of it.
As of "even the original author of a work should ask before knowingly using fanart": if you would read his post on the topic you would know he wasn't using it knowingly but subconsciously as this art stuck somewhere deep in his mind for years as one of the representative examples of shitty anime art on DA. But since he explained it only afterwards I guess it doesn't do much in this argument.
I'm not saying that NakkiStiltz should have just quietly take it and be happy the "Great and Powerful Huss" made her fanart a canon. Maybe there is no right way to deal with this type of situation. But there are certainly less assholy and more dignified ways. Thats all.
