This is a nice twist on the "student passes the test by exploiting its exact wording" story, particularly because you get the sense the android could probably have completed the task as expected if it had actually wanted to.

Dayum, savage XD I don't know how I haven't read this before??! It's a complete travesty, because I absolutely adore everything about this piece.

This is really good! I've always wondered why robots (sorry, androids) and spells don't seem to mix, even in fictional universes where both concepts exist. After all, "magic is just science that we don't understand yet."
Therefore, discovering the underlying concepts of "magic" and automating them should logically be the ultimate goal of a MAJORITY of scientists in such a setting, culminating in sentient androids that can cast spells like mages. It would be the greatest proof of the well-known phrase in the previous paragraph, proven here by a robot (android) countering a master sorceress' fire spell and then summoning a harpy. Bonus points for detecting and exploiting a loophole in the agreement to *summon* a harpy, not *control* it.
It serves those haughty mages right.

I love it! When a being transcend Law&Order. Magic has no walls, only those of your own imagination and dedication! Magic is a free energy we can find anywhere if you know how to access or feel it!
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Spirituality!
Robots are not stupid, they can learn and feel and live ! Battlestar Galactica (Cylons) & Hinokio !
Well your story is "Not a Robot" but an android who can dot it too!

What do you mean they don't pop up enough? That's literally the main plot point of 75% of sci-fi movies.

That comment was 2015.
And they don’t pop up enough. I like them that much.

Eh. When I wrote that, there were less self aware Android pieces. That’s my point.

Not really. Data(star trek), "I, robot", "I am number 5", literally every droid in star wars (Maybe not gnks, I don't think they were that self aware XD)

Please, that's only the ones I can think of at 11:00 on with bad memory. I guarantee there's more. Ooh! Terminator!

Still no. And please stop. I’m not interested in debating personal preference. I would put androids in everything.

Holy crap, this is so good. I've always loved playing with the barrier between Fantasy and Sci-Fi, and with the exact definitions that separate them. I was actually thinking of playing with the concept for today's flash fic, but I don't think it would have been half as good as this. Remarkable work! Also, congrats on the DD, I just realized!

Thanks! And you should still do it---you're an excellent writer. I am positive it'd be quite awesome. (Plus I really really really want more fantasy/sci-fi blended pieces to read.)

Hey, this is an excellent blend of sci-fi and fantasy! I've never heard of a story where science flat out challenges magic. Very creative.

Well, flailing by yourself can be fun sometimes. But this totally feels like one of the scenarios that pop up in Discworld (if Discworld were more technologically advanced than somewhere between the Renaissance and Edwardian Era). Heh. I've totally just imagined Gladys as the android, actually xD
