There's an interesting story to be told about these two. First of all, White storks are rather amazing for the long annual migrations they undertake. They fly several thousand kilometres from their breeding grounds in Europe to their wintering grounds in Africa. Each adult stork has their own favourite wintering location, and juveniles travelling with them will learn this specific migration route, allowing them to travel solo the next year.

Also notice the difference in plumage between these birds: it's all down to a recent moult or not. With time the brilliant white feathers become smudged and yellowish, the jet black of the wings is lightened into a dark brown by the sun, and the white edges to the primaries and secondaries wear off, leaving unicoloured flight feathers. White storks take a long time to moult though; most adults fully replace their flight feathers only once every few years. So it'd be rare to find a completely 'fresh' individual like this: more often you'll see animals with a mix of both old and new wing feathers.

Hmm ooievaars, beautiful birds. There is a nest in my street, two houses next to mine. Every year when the young hatch there are at least 7 to 10 of them circling around the nest site. You could say we have front row seats Nice work btw just like the rest of your work

Ah yes they're lovely birds indeed! Always so pretty looking, and very regal. Oh, how lucky you are to have a nest practically on your doorstep. We do have a breeding station/opfokcentrum/not even sure what to call it just a couple of km away, but to see storks actually near my home is rare.

study, references, sketch, resketch, attempt linework, heartbreak, frustration, contemplate giving up - and then repeat in whatever order you like until finally you reach 'relative success'

thankies c:

I know these pretty well since there are at least twenty "active" nests every year around my hometown, but thanks to you I've learned something new about them! The info about their moulting is pretty cool- and so is the drawing, of course, but that just sort of always is when it comes to your work.

That's so cool! We also have an active breeding colony nearby, plus a rearing/feeding station for captive-bred individuals that are or have been released into the wild. Gotta say the moulting was news to me as well - I was already getting so puzzled by half clean, half dirty birds in pictures haha. Thank you!

It's fun when people learn something when drawing- I sometimes discover and paint random animals that arkive.org suggest just because of that!    And the rearing station sounds awesome! Nobody in our area I know of does that, although we kept few injured storks in our zoo for a while and my classmate back from highschool made a scientific project/student conference in which she monitored all these stork nests in the area for the whole breeding season- eventually, she went to regional conference and because of that she widened her monitoring activities to one whole year, including dates of flight to Africa as well as return dates.

Ah that's cool! I know Arkive, but never thought of using it as a 'painting prompt' so to speak, that's really neat Yeah it's a cool place, often with storks year-round because the captive-born individuals usually don't have such a strong drive to migrate anymore. And whoa, what an awesome research project that sounds like. How lucky she was to have the opportunity to work on it for a whole year, and with those amazing storks as well.

These are such lovely birds. I have never seen one but love all the documentaries about them and their nests in a German village.

Oh lovely birds they are indeed! We've got a pretty good breeding colony not too far away from where I live. The storks don't usually come near my home, but if I want to see them it's only a short drive They're gorgeous, very regal looking in the way they stand and walk and even fly.

Aw I bet. After seeing your drawing I decided to watch a documentary about them.
