Description Michelangelo's Me

This is a bit different than I usually do. I usually dont use white pastels with my vine charcoal, but I thought it would be perfect to accentuate the muscles on David. I am really pleased with the right arm (David's left). My teacher though suggested that instead of doing something like this, which is totally different than the contour I usually do, that I try to marry the two. I am working on that right now, and WOW.... wait till my next picture

I believe the white was actually a conte crayon. I did this like 2 years ago, so I cant really remember if it was conte or soft pastel.

Besides that, it was done with vine charcoal and charcoal pencils on Arches Cover Buff Paper

This is excellent! The white pastel really worked to portray the texture of stone. Good paper choice too, gives it a very classical feel

I've seen this statue before and this blew me away with it's accuracy, especially with his hands. They're out of proportion to his body and you captured that and made it look as natural as it does on the statue itself. great work!

lovely gallery as a whole too! you're a fabulous artist.

thanks! I love how the hands are freakin huge on the statue, but you are right, they look natural.

no problem! yeah, the hands a feet are monstrous, but not out of place...

when we were looking at it my sister (who hasn't got a SINGLE artistic bone in her body) said "if his hands and feet are that big why is his junk so small???" I almost got kicked out of the museum I was laughing so hard... Sorry - that has no real relevance, just still makes me laugh. : D

Perfect. It is really hard to avoid using the word 'sculptural' talking about your work but I don't mean it as some cheesy pun, it's just that the forms are so perfectly defined that the images feel three-dimensional. This just leaps off the screen and the unfinished legs remind me of what Michelangelo said about his method of sculpting as freeing the person from the marble.
Brilliant.

I think you accentuated the line of the bone in the cheek and the line from the nose to the mouth to much, also is the nose smoother(not so much deep shadow) I think.
Just some little things that I saw, because I first didn't saw the head of the David in your head, it's an older David you've drawn with grieve in his heart.
But otherwise good work, must think of using those materials together, must be great.
Very good job.

I LOVE the David and this pic captures him surprisingly well. I also like the fact that u used something that u don't usually do with the white pastel. It shows ur not afraid to try something new. ^^ I respect that as an artist.

You are right, the muscles have been accentuated perfectly. There is so much power in this statue, and you have rendered that well.
