Description Hey, hey ~

All ready to get started? Okay. Just grab the lineart here [link] , and the tutorial and get to it! I left the lines very open and they aren't very detailed so you can be creative. Please save all fine tuning for the final touches. Any questions regarding this step please post here. A journal will be added on Friday for you to post a link of your progress.

A few rules:

- The light source direction is SET. Please do not alter this. The directional light is coming from her RIGHT (our left). That's all ya gotta stick to .

- Do not skip ahead. Take your time on each part and really think about texture as you color.

- Do not alter the lines yet. Any personal touches will come later.

- Do not consider this a race. You have a week.

- Please DO NOT remove my signature for the lines. DO add yours. Those colors will be all you babe~

Some tips:

- SAVE, SAVE, SAVE, and SAVE AGAIN!

- You have hands, use them to feel your own curves to get an idea of how shadows and light should fall.

- Don't get discouraged if you don't get this at first. It all comes in due time.

- Try not to use too many layers or undo too often. Paint over any mess ups instead.

- To avoid ruining the lines, keep as top layer and set to Multiply mode on your layers menu. Keep all color layers below the lines.

Good work. However the light seems to be coming from her front left instead of her right.. I know her face is blocked from the light by her hair but the way you painted the shadows themselves and the base lighting, it strongly suggests the light comes from elsewhere.

Anyway, thank you for sharing very well put-together tutorial.

This is a cool idea. I've always had trouble bringing out shadows, especially in situations where the illustration was set in a darker environment. This is a very original concept and I will definitely work this method into my art! Thank you for sharing!

What does "Multiply" actually do? And I couldn't find the tut for the clothes or hair part in your gallery; can you link me to them, if you ever posted them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OneFreeInternet In reply to swandog [2010-06-09 13:52:51 +0000 UTC]

Multiply is a blending mode that 'multiplies' the colors underneath it. For example think of pure white as the number 1 and pure black the number 0. Any color is any number in between 0 and 1. If you have say, a layer filled with red underneath, and a layer on top that has black lineart on a white background, with both layers set to normal, the red layer would be hidden by the lineart layer on top that has black and white. If you set the lineart layer to multiply, you'll see a black lineart with a red background instead of white.

This is because both the white background and the black lineart were multiplied by the red layer under them. Remember white is 1 and black is 0.. think of red as 0.5, in this case.

1 x 0.5 = 0.5 (you'll see red when white is multiplied by it)
0 x 0.5 = 0 (anything times black is black, since black is zero, so you'll see black when red is multiplied by black).

Hope that helps

Ok, thanks...I always see "multiply" being used in these digital tutorials, but I use mainly Gimp/GimpShop and Sketchbook Pro (sometimes ArtRage), so I wasn't sure how to implement that function in either program.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OneFreeInternet In reply to swandog [2010-06-09 14:51:20 +0000 UTC]

You can but take my advice: multiply is not always best for digital art; I'd only use them for lineart like this and not shading and until when you know all your blending modes perfectly I'd not recommend using multiply. It causes some muddy, undesirable colors to appear and especially when you intend to make prints for sale, avoid that blending mode. It damages the purity of your painting and causes many parts of it to look too dark and neutral. It's best to practice choosing colors yourself. That way you get more intimate with your painting and you'll know color theory better, faster.

Thanks for the help; I'm a total "n00b" when it comes to digital coloring...I've only done one piece so far, and pretty much colored it the same way I would have a traditional piece (which just doesn't work for digital, obviously): [link] So any advice is greatly appreciated!
