Nice work on the poses. I've always struggled with running poses and you make it look so effortless.

Everybody just loves pipes. They're always a good choice for improvised clobbering.

Pipes and crowbars =

Effortless? Nooo, behind the scenes it's hell!

I particularly love me some crowbars~

How do you set you the pages behind the scenes? Do you storyboard everything out, look up reference for the poses and all that?

Well for the pages, I sketch out the rough layout of the page as a thumbnail, then fill in the panels with images. Once I'm happy with that I then draw the individual images and scan them in, create the final panel layout in Photoshop, cut the images into it, then ink and colour it all

As for the poses, so far I haven't looked up any references (mostly because I doodle the images while I'm at work). I just draw the pose several times until I am happy with it. Even then, I still adjust it in Photoshop at times because I've rushed the drawings!

Thumbnails are a must. Photoshop is a life saver too, you can always modify and move around the proportions until you're happy. I tend to use lots of reference since I'm really trying to achieve a fully rendered look by spending a bunch of time on each piece and lighting requires so much studying. I think I'll start knocking out some simpler work to practice my poses and such like you're doing here.

Your work really looks effortless and that's such an important quality to have. The less you have to question about the art the more invested the reader is.

I certainly take your comment as a compliment when you say it seems effortless even if for me it doesn't feel that way!

Back in the day, I never saw the point in thumbnails! Not until I got into storyboarding... I really needed them to work quickly with a director, plus it helped so much getting the right angle in a short space of time. Ever since then I've learnt to adapt them more into my work. When I go through my gallery and look at some of my old stuff before hand, I couldn't believe the difference! I used so many really boring angles it's almost embarrassing!

I do use reference for shoulders and hands (by looking at myself in the mirror!) as I find those sooooo challenging to draw. It does help a LOT to do quick poses though, because you don't really have time to think, I find that my movement and expressions become more natural. It's strange, but I seem to work better when under pressure or at speed.

Using a mirror is a great for reference, I do it all the time. I also take pictures of my and my family's arms, legs or whatever at difficult angles. Very helpful. Boring angles and poses is something I still struggle with. Time to speed it up with more gestures and thumbs!

I only wish it was the pipe I'd meant! There could be all sorts of connotations with the love between a long metallic pipe and a woman. But I shan't go there Yet...
