My entry for 's first contest, Just a Touch of Blue.I originally just wanted to draw a girl with blue lipstick, (inspired by Regina Spektor's "Blue Lips" [link] ), but then this icy lady appeared in my sketchbook and I just went with it~
I'm glad it's not this cold (yet).

I like a lot how you developed the topic of the contest. The idea of those blue lips for this beautiful lady are a great touch, and they kind of suit the feeling of cold she gives. I also loved her hair, it reminds me of the branches behind, and it makes her appear really appealing even if they're not combed or shiny-straight.
Another thing that caught my attention is the fact that, despite her icy appearance, her expression and facial traits are very soft and sweet despite the grey of her skin or the dark circles around her eyes. It's a really interesting contrast.

Wow, this is stunning! *O* I love the grayscale and the blue lips, and the shading around her eyes and on her hair looks amazing to me. I just love the feeling in this. :3 Great work!

I love the coloring and the touch of blue. It's very frigid looking. Her hair almost looks like it was wet and froze stiff. And the way the branches and her gaze go in the same direction adds a bit of mystery.

Hey! Wow, I've been wanting to comment on this for a while, but I've been kept sooo busy! Luckily, right now I've got a little break to tell you how wonderful this is.
I'll start with the background-I really like that you used the same colors throughout the piece. The grey branches look like you went to photoshop, took the black branches, copy pasted, and changed the opacity! Very admirable to make such a great effect without actually using photoshop! You have a great sense of flow of energy. Although she is still, and the background is still, it is not static at all.
Now to the lady. Great interpretation of the theme! I agree, Regina Spektor is great inspiration! So is Twin Shadow. I love how her skin looks so smooth and her hair looks so wet, adding to the coldness of the theme. She is very pretty, and your sense of depth and realism (especially the folds of the hair on the back of the neck) is fantastic. The only thing I would suggest is more shadow of the hair on the skin. You've done this, I would just suggest more, for example, the loose strands around the face might benefit with a little more shadow. I also appreciate the intimate detail to the lace on the slip. Finally, I applaud you for the teeth. Teeth are the absolute most difficult thing to draw for me, especially when smiling. Even just a slip of teeth messes me up big time. Do you have any advice?

I appreciate what you said about energy, I was worried the piece might be overall a little boring. This was a good learning experience for me in rendering, so I'm glad you think that aspect turned out well! I agree that more shadows cast by the hair would help~
As for teeth, the best advice I can give is to make them as subtle as possible. Don't emphasize each tooth too much - just draw the general shape of them all together and slightly shade in between the teeth for definition. Also, don't leave them white! I actually shaded them completely grey here. Unless someone's smiling very widely or yelling, not a lot of light actually hits the teeth. Hope that helps!

The diagnol branches give it a slightly eerie feeling but keep it enchanting all the same, along with the lips.

It's creepy..just the way the branches(?) curve upward and slightly towards her, and how there's not any leaves on them.

Although you don't like it, creepiness is partly what I was going for. There aren't any leaves because it's winter and the branches are frozen.

I really love the organic background and the pop of blue to add to the icy feeling. She has a really long neck too.
