Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],
The appropriate response is "Wa alaikum assalaam" (And upon you be peace.)
The Noble Qur'an reminds believers to reply to a greeting with one of equal or greater value. the God Almighty -Glory be to him- said what can be translated as:
"When a courteous greeting is offered to you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or at least of equal courtesy."

The Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- used to greet people with "Assalaamu alaikum," and encouraged his followers to do so as well. This helps bond Muslims together as one family, and establish strong community relationships. It was the practice of early Muslims that the person who enters a gathering should be the first one to greet the others. It is also recommended that a person walking should greet a person who is sitting, and a younger person should be the first to greet an older person. When two Muslims argue and cut off ties, the one who reestablishes contact with a greeting of "salaam" receives the greatest blessings from the God almighty.
the prophet -peace be upon him- is reported to have said:
"I swear by the one whose hand my soul is in (meaning the God almighty) that you will not enter paradise until you believe. And you won’t be believed until you love one another. May I tell you something, that if you practice it you will love another, spread the salaam (Islamic greeting) among you."

This makes it clear to us, that spreading salaam among Muslims is the first step towards paradise. This is because spreading salaam leads to increasing the love between our hearts. And the increase of love between our hearts will increase the Imaan (faith).

I have recently became an atheist (I was exposed to God in different ways; but just being grateful to a person without expecting there to be Someone else, very powerful, behind their good acts is what works for me). But it means a lot to me when people spread Love through religion.
As a brony and furry, I myself try to live the "Love and Tolerate" way.
I'm no wise person to really question if my belief or lack of belief is true or not; but I'm surrounded my religious people spreading hate, and it's important to me when people show what the words really mean and that religion is to be lived with respect; it's supposed to be the root of love and peace.
So thank you very much for helping me believe religion, and God, can be the very reason and inspiration for people to be good.
