Description Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the world.
The word "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root word for "parched thirst" and "sun-baked ground." It is expressive of the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.

Through fasting, a Muslim experiences hunger and thirst, and sympathizes with those in the world who have little to eat every day.
Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator, and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him.
Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings of generosity and good-will toward others.
Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners, good speech, and good habits.
Through changing routines, Muslims have a chance to establish more healthy lifestyle habits -- particularly with regards to diet.
Through family and community gatherings, Muslims strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, in their own communities and throughout the world.

Ramadan is a very special time for Muslims, but the feelings and lessons we experience should stay with us throughout the year. In the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may "learn self-restraint" (Qur'an 2:183). This restraint and devotion is especially felt during Ramadan, but we all must strive to make the feelings and attitudes stay with us during our "normal" lives. That is the true goal and test of Ramadan.

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path. May Allah bless us all during Ramadan, and throughout the year, with His forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other.

Wassalaamu alaikum,

winter terbenam mataharinya cepet banget, sekitar jam 4 sore, terbitnya jg lambat, jadi puasanya sebentar.
Summer sebaliknya, matahari terbit jam 4 pagi n terbenam jam 8an malam, jd usaha banget tuh puasa waktu summer

Wow!!! true facts for sure!! Fasting sure is useful for us!
maybe it's better I tell these to my friends that say fasting is hard for them and they can't last it (hey, it's not that hard, isn't it?)
Very very adorable!!!!

it all depends on how prepared you are. I believe if you eat what gives you energy and not just what fills you up. and if you occupy your time with work during the day and not just sit and wait for iftar, then you can fast easily without any problems...

"Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners, good speech, and good habits." I think I'm going in the opposite direction
My brother intentionally annoys me and somehow I get angry and scream at him. What should I do? I try so hard but I can't stop D:

The 18 hour fasting isn't good for your overall health. It can do terrible damage to your liver, my uncle got very sick from fasting over the summer. It will make you weaker, and you can get sick. I'm absolutely not against fasting...I am merely disagreeing with a few points. Mashallah, it brings us together as Muslims and helps cleanse us of our sins, but it can harm us if our bodies are of a generally average build. Healthy as you are, fasting is good for the soul. ^^ I agree with you on how it brings us together, just the health benefits is all Sorry if I am coming across as rude~

That is why Allah tells us not to fast if we are sick.

Nayzak In reply to DorianGrayCM [2011-08-07 08:53:14 +0000 UTC]

you said Mashallah, do I understand that you are a Muslim? if so, does this mean that you think that Allah orders us to do what hurts us?

first, in Islam, if you are unable to fast, then you don't have to fast. you shouldn't force yourself to fast and then complain when your health becomes worse.

the health benefits of fasting are a proven medical fact and many non-Muslim doctors suggest them as remedy for their patients (depending on their situation) if you want to check, google "health benefits of fasting" or go and ask your doctor.
peace.

No, I am not saying this. All I am saying is that fasting to this degree, especiall in this month (as the fast is so long) will harm you physically if you are of an average build. Many people, Muslims, have become ill already. Allah is not making us sick, for many of us are unprepared for such a long fast. It harms average people physically draining them. It does build character and a spiritual conection, of course. But I am merely disagreeing with the statement saying it was good for our health. Good for our soul, yes, but not physically. Allah will accept the best we can do, but if we harm ourselves in the process, as many are, we are permitted to stop.

I study medicine, and have relatives who are doctors. Fasting in a reasonable amount of time can be good for your health, but overall with this lengthy time period it causes harm to the liver. Overall I am not saying fasting for everyone is harmful, but it can be.

Nayzak In reply to DorianGrayCM [2011-08-07 23:07:17 +0000 UTC]

from what you are talking, I take it you are not fasting in this Ramadan. right?

my friend, fasting is harmful only for those who are not prepared. in Ramadan, the Muslim has to be smart and eat what gives him energy and help his body keep longer. not go and fill his stomach with everything and then complain saying that fasting harms him. in fact, fasting is totally bearable for an average person. only a weak person who forces himself to fast or a person who doesn't know how to choose the appropriate diet for fasting are the ones who feel hurt.

I understood your point, if you think that you can't bear fasting, then you can eat and let the other Muslims fast and get the health benefits and the reward.
may Allah help you.

Salam

If someone can't fast for a sickness or something Islam allowed him to eat !

DorianGrayCM In reply to waad11 [2011-08-07 22:53:05 +0000 UTC]

Of course, I am merely stating that in this long period of fast many of us become greatly weak from the stress of the day. Islam absolutely permits you to stop fasting if you are ill

But it also makes fat people lose weight- isn't that great?

DorianGrayCM In reply to xxAREESHAxx [2011-08-07 22:52:06 +0000 UTC]

I thought this as well, but fasting does not help one lose weight in the traditional manner. As we do less physical activity during this month, as we are tired, our stomachs may come off as larger. It is the same for people who skip breakfast. When you do this, your stomach goes into survival mode. When you do consume a meal, your stomach bulges out making you appear larger. If you wish to lose weight you must lower your calorie intake and up your energy output. When fasting we increase our calorie intake in order to survive the day, and conserve our energy~~

Are there certain foods that you eat during Ramadan? If not, then what would stop someone from chowing down on bad food when they are allowed to eat during the evening hours?
