The purpose for digital affect was to make them look like projections that can easily be defeated or banished. I imagine when they have been resolved/defeated they break like glass and dissolve away. The progression of resolution results in more and more cracks on them till they burst. X3
However, they are human thoughts, things that we or others assign to us because we are social beings and thus live in a society together. These are the things that someone always thinks of or has to think of the more they mature.
I almost gave away the names of them as I wrote the sentence above to describe them
I think so too we all have something to dwell on and we all get overwhelmed by the thoughts, whether they are our own or someone else's.

hard to pin but that makes this piece all the more interesting because it can be interpreted on so many different levels

Yes they are thoughts I guess you could say because they stem from thoughts and thus have an affect on you. Depressive, not for me but I guess the stress from them could cause it, if you let them. There is a reason for their positioning though :3 and why only one has a scar.
I would say what they are but I will give a bit more time for someone to guess it

I've been asked that too, for me it's not that, but I can see where it could be taken that way. To me, what people say is all suggestion you can either agree or disagree with what they say, ultimately what you do is your decision alone. No-one can make you do something (technically speaking).
So while others can and do have an influence on these thoughts that you control or decide to see in a different light, this is my response to the pressure from them I'm feeling. It's neither good or bad. It exists either way so I have to find a way to deal.
I will say that the one in the front and the one in the back are polar opposites. :3
