Umm, yeah. I loved Pokemon so much as a kid (be honest with me, who didn't? NO LYING), and now, when I look back at all the terrible dubbing and such, I wonder, "how was THIS ever considered a good dub job?"And knowing that 4Kids is near-universally despised by the anime fandom, c'mon, I had to do this.

I respect the opinion that 4Kids is a bad dubber. However, I wouldn't say the same for people treating it as a fact. In my opinion(For the record, my opinion isn't a fact either and I know that), 4Kids may have had some duds and, sure, they weren't the best dubbing company by any means, but they aren't the worst and they helped make anime a thing to the United States. Censorship was heavy, but they had moral guardians and censors on their backs, and the fact that their dubs were running on Saturday mornings was another contributor to said censorship. I'm sick of seeing people go "ERMAGERD NU KHANJEE U MUNZTURS!!1!1!!" whenever they see a censored dub, because the writing and acting are the real focus of a show.

you know, it's funny because i think the voice actors of 4kids aren't half bad...

before someone stabs my brains out, lemme clarify. Yes, the voice DIRECTING, and the actual dubbing is terrible. But the actors themselves seem like they want to try. I've heard the acting of Veronica Taylor, Dan Green, and Ted Lewis and such. They're great actors, but it sounds like they've dubbed the lines in one take. In fact, if you listen to some of Ted Lewis's work, he has an unusual voice range. And so does Veronica Taylor, hell she has to provide the voice of both ASH AND MAY. So, the producers and directors of 4kids can go drown in a well for all i care, but the voice actors at least have some potential. I'm sorry if i was preaching on this, but i thought i'd make myself clear

Yeah I agree. I have to admit that I liked some of the voice actors for putting all their hard work and dedication into bringing a character to life. If there is anyone to blame (excluding the voice actors), it's the terrible script, voice directing, and pointless dubbing.

I think the performances of the actors are fine (for the most part; most of 4kids IS actually kids stuff) but sometimes I just don't understand the direction. Particularly when the English script writers feel the need to jam 300 extra lines of dialogue in a new scene. Just because we can SEE the character's heads, doesn't mean they're talking away from the "camera". Digimon had this problem too, even if the actors did their best.

I agree, the failure of the actors can be blamed on poor scripts, casting and direction. They do have potential.

I don't understand why 4kids has to pick up shows that so obviously ARE NOT kids shows. They're the reason for the English failures of One Piece, and Sonic X (Sonic X was more for older kids, in the "Naruto viewer" age range). It's cool that actors working for 4kids got to voice certain characters, but I hate what the directors make them change half the time.

actually it's just a pickup are kids shows in Japan. "What do you mean, It's for kids." I beat you will be saying. But the Shouen demographic is geared towards and yugioh etc boy. And in addition to One Piece, PokΓ©mon, Sonic X, and Yugioh it's titles also include: Attack On Titan, Black Butler, Blue Exorcist, Claymore, D Gray Man, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Etc. Japan is a different culture with different standards on this things.

I can understand titles like PokΓ©mon and Sonic X, but the Shonen genre in general can appeal in a spectrum from young kids to teens. Some appeal to all, but others only appeal to one group. One Piece for example, was meant to have an older demographic despite the fact that younger kids in Japan (and sometimes the US) do read/watch it. But that's also like saying here in North America,Β shows like The Simpsons were purposely meant to be watched by kids. ... yeah, I know that younger kids watch it, but that doesn't mean it was meant for that target audience. Even with the cultural differences between Japanese television and the US, some shows were meant for an older audience, and it kind of baffles me how 4Kids would take a show meant for teens, and create this half-assed attempt at making it a kid's show. Especially when you see what they try to "censor".
