I can see this working well for messengers other then Arlen since he is more of a monk style of character and he needs something that can easily be ripped off at a moments notice which this outfit would not provide.

Yeah, I know. At the beggining it was my intention but then my concept changed for an early era Arlen when he was still a messenger. All this confusion because I was too lazy to erase runes from his face. Sorry for that!

With that you have to remember Arlen was a young preteen/teen at the time of him being made a messenger. and shortly afterwards he took to the desert. So this looks to old to be before that time. But like I said it works for other messengers quite well tho.
