Now, in my heart "Cabaret" is the title of a musical, which was filmed as a movie starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey. And I started picturing The Puppet as the Emcee, and then this happened.

As I was painting this their personalities kinda developed. Chica and Bonnie are both onstage flirts. Bonnie is even moreso offstage, and will flirt with anyone making eye contact. Try to call his bluff and he'll call yours. He plays both male and female parts in the act as needed. Chica, on the other hand, is only a flirt for the show, and is more likely to tell the creeps who hang around outside the dressing room door to shove off or show them her claws--or call in Bonnie as a distraction. Freddy's onstage persona is a Benny Hill-ish "dirty old man," but offstage he's gentlemanly, the kind to take a bunch of beautiful women out to dinner just for the company and then go home to relax with a good book. The Puppet...well, to be honest not much is known about him, and the others really don't want to know more than they already do. He's creepy, but he also does the casting.

Warning: Photoshop nerdery ahead: I used a technique on the shading that I haven't played with in at least a year. Instead of creating a layer for shading and another for lighting, then selecting each separate color, creating light and dark versions of that color, and painting them on their respective layers, I created light and dark layers by duplicating the entire colored later, then playing with the curves to lighten and darken them, manually tweaking certain colors like red that don't respond well to that technique. Then I masked each layer and painted in the shading with white on the mask. What that means is that instead of constantly painting a color, then reselecting another color and making the light and dark versions, then painting--a very stop-and-start method--I can do all the shading at once, only swapping between black and white to either hide or reveal what's behind the layer masks! It's much faster once the setup is done.
