If I recall correctly, wasn't there an episode with a post-ending scene concerning Ichigo, his Hollow and Zangetsu? I remember Zangetsu and the Hollow were tormenting Ichigo about how barren and boring his inner world was. Zangetsu said something about needing a garden, then the Hollow added that the garden should come included with cats. Or at least, it was something along those lines. xD

Hehe aww my parents said the same thing when i wanted to get a rat... but i got one anyway and hid him for 3 months then when i went away for the weekend they found him and bought a massive cage and they absolutely loved him and when he died made me get 4 more ratties XD
