Description A quick and simple Thylacosmilus atrox sketch I whipped up yesterday and colored today.

I feel informative. Have some Thylacosmilus information:

Thylacosmilus was a South American sparassodont (marsupial relative) that had saber teeth that were constantly growing, not unlike rodent teeth. Its saber teeth were serrated both on the front and back edge, as opposed to the back-edge serrations of dirk-toothed and scimitar-toothed felines. It had a really cool skull , product of the deep roots of its 30cm long canines. It went extinct around 1.8 million years ago and was 100% badass.

I meant it to be the first of several "thank you" drawings for Terryl Whitlatch, but now I'm second guessing it and can't bring myself to post it to her facebook page She really liked it!

Nice, the posture of the limbs is very realistic. And of course, is always welcome images of a sparassodont

Gotta love Thylacosmilus, he was awesome

My, that skull is impressive, those tooth roots reach all the way above his eyes! I like how you represented it with bumps on his nose

Plus, you gave him one awesome fur pattern, you can totally see him roaming a forest or a marsh Great job! 8D

Thank you so much Arven!

I agree. I can never get over how amazingly bizarre Thylacosmilus' skull is.

Hoho no problems!

True that, that skull is so awesome!

All saber toothed animals have very interesting skulls, Smilodon's is also very bizarre, especially with that huge angle of gape!

And even if Thylacosmilus wasn't related to the saber toothed cats, its skull remains absolutely fascinating

Flips yeah! We saw it's skull in the NY Natural History Museum. Can't help imagining the looks on the faces of those who discovered the first skull, they were probably all like "DAFUQ IS THIS?!"

What are you talking about woman?? It looks great! Post it! Not so much for you but for her. It must feel very good have inspired artists enough to have them post a badassΒ ThylacosmilusΒ sketch on her fb page.

Yes we did! It's always so cool to see Thylacosmilus skulls

I wonder! Depending on when it was discovered, if Barbourofelis had already been discovered, then there might have been slightly less "DAFUQ-ery", but still quite a bit of it. Thylacosmilus has no incisor teeth at all, just its great big canines, so that is pretty freaking weird. I think when they realized it was a marsupial relative, minds were blown. Here, let me blow yours right now: Thylacosmilus has a very close relative called Borhyaena that barely looks like it at all.

I posted it, and she liked it

Did you.. did i... did i just get paleonthology'd? *Faked offended face and gasp* One day i'm going to buy a big ass book on primitive mammals and be less ignorant, until then, thank you for the facts. ^^ Yeah, it must be damn hard to classify this crits and there must be a lot of "heck-what?-nah!-wait-wow!" moments.

Borhyaena was probably an adorable stumpy-legged thing and yep, looks nothing like his cousin. Have you checked the species of Barbourofelis on the wiki page?Β Barbourofelis fricki! That says it all.

Of course she did you silly thing! Have some faith in your abilities, will ya'?

For a great book on prehistoric mammals, I highly recommend "Prehistoric Mammals" from National Geographic by Alan Turner and illustrated by Mauricio AntΓ³n

Cool! I added it to my wishlist, it's surprisingly cheap for a hardcover book! Thankies!

Yes you diiiiiid

A great big book of primitive mammals would be awesome! But in the meantime, Wikipedia works just as well (if not better sometimes, because it updates with new information as it becomes available)

Remember the story we told you in NY? The story of the classification of Barbourofelis? In case you don't, I'll tell it again. What happened was, they thought it was a cat. Then they discovered that it, and other cats called Nimravids, were not cats at all (but an animal called Nimravides IS a cat). THEN they discovered that Barbourofelis wasn't a Nimravid either. That's a pretty good example of a "heck-what?-nah!-wait-wow!" moment, don't you think?

I do have faith in my abilities, but it kind of turns into jello around Terryl ;-;

Yes, wikipedia is great, i just wished for something that would classify the beasties inside time periods (not just, you know, taxonomy, although wiki entries usually include the time and place they lived in, so yeah, it's great for detailed information).

Oups, no, i didn't remembrer, but don't be offended please i can't remember the cranial nerves either and i've had to learn them like three times already. T_T Haha, agreed. That probably keeps happening all the time in palenthology, but that's science for you, further knowledge equals questioning of prior assumptions (it also happens in the classification of bacteria for example, and they started getting classified only a century and some ago).

Ah, it's okay, all artist have a teenie voice screaming "NOT GOOD ENOUGH!", but it's all worth it when another teenie voice answers with a "fuck you i did it and it's awseome".

One day it will be you surrounded by jelly-legged budding artists.

Do you know if there's a known biologic reason for the mandible to be shaped like that?

nekonotaishou In reply to TheRootOfAllEvil [2013-11-20 01:01:02 +0000 UTC]

They think it was to both protect the teeth when the mouth was closed, and help channel the stress of struggling prey when the animal was biting down on it.
