One day when I move back to the United States to raise my family, I'll undoubtedly be raising my children as atheists, at least until an age when they are experienced and knowledgeable enough to make the decision about their beliefs for themselves.Something I'm concerned about is that Atheists seem to be seen as awful human beings by religious people. We're less trusted than rapists. I mean, just look at this forum thread that ~Mephistophilez linked to me: "Atheists Should Be Registered Like Sex Offenders!"
*Apparently that site was meant to be satirical, says ~Mephistophilez , but it's still pretty scary nonetheless lol... The story is apparently true though. Here are some links:

It's enough to encourage me to raise my kids only in my home state of Washington (or in Oregon), since they are fairly liberal states in the first place. Yup. So. That's that.

Both sides can be assholes. I've met a lot of religious assholes that criticize agnostics and atheists for their beliefs as well. I'll be frank:
A LOT of Christians don't trust Atheists because of simply the negative stuff that they may see.
Unfortunately, although there are PLENTY of Christians who are just as horrible as we may find some Atheists, it's a simple prejudiced we have against the group due to a (maybe) smaller group of extremists.
For example, the many Atheist on Deviantart and the Internet in general who've taken to bashing all "Bible-thumpers" and "Christfags". :Shrug:
After a while of being exposed to hate, it starts to turn into a prejudiced, similar to the ones Atheists have about Christians who actually ARE hateful and evil.
It'a a big fat circle of extremists on both sides ruining the reputations of the good people in those groups.

I think it also stems from Christians who are new to this tendency.
For all of our lives before the Internet, we always probably thought that being a Christian meant we are good people; that we were living right.
But then we get online only to find out that for so many OTHERS that hate us because of things other individuals did to them.
They then have to go through the whole questioning themselves because they never saw the hatred that groups of Christians have given to other parts of society either. They just know that there is a group out there that hates us, and thinks we're stupid for simply believing in something.
