The breaking dawn marked the end of the fourth night Marren had spent in the swamps, nestled in the arms of a smaller tree's branches. The bark already bore countless scratch marks of his unsuccessful attempt at climbing it, but now that he was thus far up, he wouldn't come down before he'd completed his task. For days, the young Mitu hadn't caught a glimpse of another pack mate, but this didn't worry him, even though he'd thought he would run into an aspiring hunter or warrior here.
Marren knew this was something he had to do alone. If he wanted to prove himself worthy of the pack, he needed to complete the coming of age trial without any help, and he would bring back a passion fruit flower this season. He had to, he needed to be able to look into another Mitu cat's eyes without thinking of himself as unworthy. If the path to serving his pack was by becoming a healer, then that was what he would do, whatever it took.
Realistically, he knew that this year wasn't the only chance he'd get, but the expectations of a warrior instilled into him at an early age were not something he could easily ignore, as much as he wanted to move past that.

Beneath the tall trees, the sun's rays could barely filter through in the morning, but the elevated height gave Marren the perfect view of what he was seeking. The flowers glinted in the morning light, just barely out of reach, but promising him a semblence of the future he had always longed for. Acceptance, approval. Respect.

If he could just streeeeetch a little farther...

Finally, Marren's Coming of Age Trial!
I think Marren really needed to complete his at three years old, or he would have never quite believed in himself and what he's capable of. Poor little boy! But things will look better for him from now on, with an actual position in his pack

I'm actually quite pleased with how this came out, seeing as the lines are rather... old xD But commissions kept having priority, so when I finally had the time to work on this some more, I just couldn't bother redoing the lines
