One thing I didn't quite understand about the series was that: if Aang wanted to rebuild the Air Nomads so badly, then why did he not just Energybend Airbending abilities into eg, Air Acolyte volunteers? Why did we have to wait until Harmonic Convergence for the Airbenders to resurface?
Also have a bit of a naming problem with the Air Nation: it seemed quite a misnomer due to the practice of not laying claim to particular territories and helping those in need. Aside from which, the 'Nation' label was already taken by the Fire Nation. I think one name which might possibly work better could be 'Air Collective'? What say you?

It's never been shown that the Avatar, even with energybending, can give bending to non-benders. As far as we know, Korra and Aang could only give bending to those who had their bending taken away. It's possible that he is capable of it, but he probably never discovered how or else I'm sure he would've been granting airbending at the very least to air acolyte initiates.
Air Nomads did technically lay claim to certain areas--the mountains and temples they resided in as well as, apparently, certain sacred pastures (as revealed in "The Rift"). The Fire Nation does already use the word "nation" in their title, and I probably would've preferred if they used a different term, but nation still works because they all are referred to collectively as "the four nations". Frankly, I didn't agree with the term "Air Nomads" in Avatar, because they weren't nomadic. They took up residence in the four air temples, they didn't roam the lands, following herds of wild air bison and whatnot (if they didn't all stay grouped together in four, concentrated hot spots, the Fire Nation probably would've had a much harder time wiping every single one out). The only time this is addressed is at the end of Book 3, when Tenzin states that, rather than do what they've been doing (living and training at the air temple), he wanted the air nation to take up its "nomadic roots".
I don't know what alternative name I'd give them. Maybe "Air Commonwealth" or "Air Dominion".

Of those two, I think 'Air Commonwealth' works better. 'Air Dominion' gives me the same feeling I got from the Earth Empire, a feeling of them being invaders and somewhat authoritarian, which I don't see in the new Airbenders. I agree about the original Air Nomads being dispersed making it harder for the Fire Nation to destroy them; from what I saw at the end of Avatar, Sozin's Comet doesn't stay in the atmosphere long enough to allow for hunting of the Airbenders if they're too dispersed (I failed to see how Ozai could even hope to destroy the whole Earth Kingdom with just one fleet of airships, even with the Comet's additional power boost; it's too large an area to cover in too limited an amount of time, especially when the fleet was so closely clustered together).
A thought just occurred to me while writing this: do you think a better term than 'Air Nomads' for the pre-Hundred Year War Airbenders could be 'Air Enclaves'? Not sure what other terms we can use for that group, but what say you?
