Description Just a little something from last year.

The nekomata is a cat monster (for lack of a better word) from japanese myth. They start out as regular cats that, at some point, gain supernatural powers and a split tail.

This one's design is based on a cat of mine who had to be put to sleep last year due to cancer.

Done on paper in a "recycled sketch book" that I bought some time ago, with pencils and white charcoal. The paper unfortunately got wrinkled at some point, and I don't know if it's possible to get it flat again. Maybe I'll try rescanning it when it's not 1:30 in the morning anymore.

i really like the concept and the texture for the fur is really well done ^_^

I know a trick that works most times for staightening paper: you could place it at the back of a heavy book (that usually works ) alternatively you could try ironing it between two sheets of paper on the lowest heat setting ( not sure what effect that would have on the picture since i seldom use charcol )

yay I get to sound smart! ok how the story goes is if a cat lives to be about nine years old and still have its long tail it will become a bakeneko, or a ghost cat, it will gain the ability to stand on it's hinde legs, speak, transform and other super natural powers, and if the cat continues to grow it can get as tall as a full grown man and once it get to that point its tail will split into two and it becomes a nekomata.

I know what it's like to lose a friend like that, I had a dog that got hit by a car while he was chasing alongside it, he died doing what he loved. Oh, and fav'd.

So lovely! The story behind it is so sweet, too... (I can empathize, I had to put one of my cats down two months ago- she had kidney failure. It's so nice to be able to memorialise your cat like this.)

Aww, it's so sketchy and kitty! Is it because cats are curious that it's making a question mark?

I...was actually going for just some random swirly thing.

But I guess a question mark works well too, haha.

i totally thought it was one of those soul-like flames that the bakeneko/ Nekomata are capable of summoning XD

That's uber cute! I wish i had one ^.^
I'm really sorry to hear about your cat's death... this picture must have been painful to keep.
Nevertheless, I'm glad you did. Even as a sketch it's really good and detailed!
Keep up the good work!

Thanks, I will.

It actually wasn't that painful for me...yeah, I miss my cat (I had her for eight years, how could I not?), but not to the point where I'll do something like tear up at just the mention of her name (like my sister does...oh boy). I'd rather honor her through pictures - like I did here - than let her dwindle away in my memory...so yeah. ^_^

hehe, I respect you for that ^__^
There have been a few times I've drawn something then ripped it up because of one reason or another... some good drawings too >_o

I'd like to see this character again in some new work ^.^ Just a thought though~

Again, great work ^__^

re: unwrinkling-- I think my sister had good luck with putting a paper she crushed under a piece of cloth and then ironing it; not sure how that would affect the charcoal, though. I'd imagine it would smudge. x.o

nepryne In reply to Keleri [2007-02-24 18:26:10 +0000 UTC]

Hopefully not too much, as long as the cloth isn't being moved around a lot.

That sounds like it might work. Too bad I don't have an iron or anything similar on me at the moment, or I'd try it.

The pencil and white charcoal lines give an ancient and fable theme to the whole picture! Really like the cat's eyes here.
