Here's the second draft of my next Smurf deviation. The dreaded Purple Smurf now finds himself surrounded by a bunch of smurfy commandos (clockwise from bottom left): Smurfette, Vexy, Slouchy, Papa, Hackus and even Baby are ready to let him have it with tuberose pollen, the cure for Purple Disease, so he can return to his smurfy blue self. And the captured Purple Fly ain't too happy at what's about to smurf.
More Smurfs will aim their pollen guns at Purple, including a few you wouldn't expect. Basically his g'napping days are over.

Thanks, Songal ! The final version of this will have a few more Smurfs and a full color background. I may also go back to redrawing "Vexy with the Light Brown Hair Too"; that was traced from an existing publicity cartoon of Vexy and I think I've gotten enough of a feel for Peyo's style to try re-drawing that on my own.

Yes, I am. The Black Smurfs were recolored purple by Hanna-Barbera for the TV series out of concerns that African-American audiences would be offended by the evil nature of the Black Smurfs, and they were correct. Over time, that controversy has faded, and most black audiences don't see it that way anymore. My depicting Purple Smurfs with red pupils is a compromise between the two versions.
I have in my sketchbooks an outline for a story called "Purple Bugged", a rewrite of the episode "The Purple Smurfs" that is entirely comedy-driven and not so dramatic. After Papa is bitten and all the Smurfs turn purple, the village degenerates into endless g'napping, tail-biting, sticking out tongues at each other and pie fights. Instead of playing his off-key trumpet, Purple Harmony eats it. Purple Papa finds a scapegoat in Gargamel (Gaah-G'nap!) and all the Purple Smurfs attack his castle. Gargy cures them with Hawaiian tuberose pollen ("an especially sweet pollen for their sickly sweet personalities") only to keep himself and Azrael from being g'napped out of house and home.
