In this tutorial I will talk about ways to get more watchers. I will be talking about the good and bad ways to get watchers, and why your watcher count is not nearly as important as you think. Hope it helps!
I will first talk about the don'ts (red/pink) and then the do's (green). Questionable ways to get watchers are inlcuded inbetween (yellow)
ASKING PEOPLE TO WATCH YOU
Please, don't do this.
From time to time I see deviations with descriptions saying things like "~and plase watch me~~" or people commenting on other's profiles, asking them to watch them. Please don't do this. It is not only rude to go and beg people for a watch, but most of the time it is also written in a aggresive manner. Things like 'why did u stop watching me' or something like that isn't necesarry.
People decide for themselves who they watch, and it shouldn't be obligated. Some people like to keep the total of people they watch small so they can favourite and comment on every deviation. That someone doesn't watches you doesn't mean they do hate your art, really. Don't push people to watch you please.
Llamas
Please, don't.
Nowadays it is really popular to spam people with llamas. You know, llamas, the little badges you can't do anything with. Although I love the idea of giving llama badges to good artists, a lot of people use them to get noticed. For example, if you receive such a badge you will probably check out that person's profile. If they give a lot of badges to a lot of people they will get more pageviews, and eventually more watchers.
This isn't a good way to get more watchers. Not only are you just randomly giving out badges and not looking at people their art, it is also pretty irritating to get llamas all the time. Some people told me they really got spammed with them, and it is annoying to think you got an important message and instead open it to see you only gotten an useless llama. Please don't do this.
FAVING
You could do this if you want?
Like faving people their art to get their attention really isn't that bad. It is a way of getting noticed, and nobody really minds getting favorites, right?
I think there is only one downside to this. Please, if you go fave everyones art, atleast take the effort to look at it. A lot of people out there just open up newest, favourite a lot of drawings, and don't even look at the drawing. I think this is really rude, and you should only favorite the art if you like it (or want someone to feel good about it). Don't just randomly favourite things.
What you could do however, is find people that are interested in the same things as you are? For example, I myself favourite and comment on lot of yaoi fanart, which sometimes get me watchers or messages of people who are also interested in this, and sometimes even want to arttrade or something. Don't only favourite things to get attention.
DAHUB
Yes and no?
For the ones not knowing what dAhub is, it is a profile on which you can pay points for watchers, favs and llamas. You can also earn points for watching and faving things from others.
I tried to get more watchers in the beginning with dAhub, and I am not saying that you won't get more watchers with dAhub. You can get like tons of watchers there! But do mind one thing.
The watchers you get from there are only people who do it for the points and not because they like your art. Big change they won't be commenting or faving any of your works or even look at it. It will cost you points to get them, but big change those watchers unwatch you after they got their points. This really isn't a good way to get watchers, and it may get your watcher count up, but don't think you will get more comments or favs in this way.
I am not saying the system behind dAhub is bad, but I am just saying you shouldn't spend all your money on getting watchers from there. What I do like about dAhub is the favorites. I personally use it to boost the favorites on my commission journal for it to be in 'What's Hot' so more people will notice it! :> (A guide about commissions is coming soon! )
HOSTING EVENTS
Absolutely!
So how I got a lot of watchers was by hosting events. With events I mean community things on dA, like contest, kiribans and raffles. In this way your profile gets viewed more often, and you will get more watchers this way.
Raffles are the best event to gain watchers with. Host a raffle, and if the people who enter want an extra ticket to win, simply say they can get it by watching you. Or maybe they are only allowed to join if they watch you? Giving them an option is better in my opinion, don't make watching you an obligation.
Contest get spread really easily among groups and people. For example, if I make a contest entry, other people will maybe check out the contest as well along with your profile. Again, the same applies as the raffle. You can make it a contest for only watchers, or make it a rule that they have to share the journal in a journal of their own.
But remember, don't overwork yourself with hosting things. Don't promise things that you now are too much for you, and make sure the raffle prize could be done in about a week. Keep the events fun for other's, but most importantly, for yourself. Be careful please
GET HELP FROM A FRIEND!
Yes!
Sometimes getting noticed is hard, and asking a friend for help isn't that bad of an idea.
For example, I think a lot of my friends deserve way more watchers than they actually have. You could ask a friend with more watchers if they could help you out by making a journal about them or something, saying that they should watch you.
So for example, I want to help out my friend MelloFloyd , who in my opinion deserves more watchers. I could make a journal with something like this.
"Hiya guys! Check out this neato mate of mine named MelloFloyd ! Definitely worth a watch! <3 "
In return, they could make such a journal for mine, and we could help each other out to get more watchers by advertising for each other!
(But in all seriousness, go check them out. They are neato!)
BE KIND AND SOCIALIZE!
What? Who would have thought that being kind would get you somewhere?
In all seriousness, not a joke. Just be kind to people in the community. Sounds pretty simple right?
I am not saying that you should just be fake kind to everyone. You don't have to go out and compliment every artist you see. I am just saying that you should be kind to people in this community. Don't answer with only 'ok', but maybe talk to someone on here? Talk to someone, make some friends! A big part of watchers are mostly friends, and if you're kind to people they are more likely to watch you back! Be kind and people tend to be more kind to you, it is that easy
MAKE GOOD ART
I am completely aware that this one may sound a bit cliché, but still. If you want a lot of watchers you shouldn't focus too much on your watcher total. Just let it go, make some art, and the better the art gets the more watchers you get! Don't be insulted if someone isn't your watcher anymore. Go make art, show them what they are missing!
The people on here with the most watchers make the most stunning artworks, and if you want to have as much watchers as they you should practice and practice. I believe in you, you can reach the same level if you keep practicing! Art is not a talent, it is a skill (see How To - Improve Your Drawing)
END WORD
Please don't focus too much on your watcher total. One watcher that favorites and comments and just is kind to you is worth way more than 100 watchers that do nothing. Really, your watcher total isn't as important as you think. Just remember to not worry about it too much, okay? <3
Keep drawing and writing and whatever, and the watchers will come eventually. Just enjoy what you do!
Have a very lovely and llama-spam-free day!

Thanks for posting a journal / tutorial on why simple courtesy is still a boon in DA Land.
I tend to do art-trades with a few DA friends. That can also gain new watchers / friends.
What I tend not to do, is thank people for the faves that I receive. It might seem rude, but there are better messages or images to post on someone's page, instead of five pages to read of "Thanks for the Faves!!" (I will post kitty pictures on a friend's wall because I know that she likes cats.)

Thanks for the journal! Personally, I wish I could get more watchers, some people have been on DA later than me and get more watchers than me. I do wish I could improve on my art and get more watchers. I sometimes think I don't get many watchers because the quality of my art sucks (I love drawing, but seriously, I don't really like the quality of it at times).
But anyways, the advice was helpful even though I don't do some of things mentioned.

Yes! This was a great tutorial, doll! And very useful, things here needed to be said! One day, I favorite someone's art piece because it was well done and that piece deserved it. They messaged me saying thank you and to watch them. Now, I usually don't mind watching people, who doesn't need watchers? But the way it was said. Sigh.

I've been experiencing the Llama part though lol. Sometimes I receive a watch then comment saying my art is good but when I replied, it seems that he only watched me and gave a good comment just to get a Watch back.
I believe that giving watch would mean gaining a new inspiration from something you've never seen before and it makes you want to do a similar art like them. In the same sense, you gain references and new ideas; expanding your own art and knowledge (not to mention techniques) and some would be tutorials, art base, designs and much more. Its all about breaking out your imagination and mostly having fun!
As for me, my inspiration are TysonTan and Napkit . I just have a soft spot for furies and some chibi characters =w= If you want, you can check out their gallery, its pretty much a stunner ^_^.

This is a really useful tool for Artists to gain more Watchers. I've been wanting answers on how it works for so long!
Even if I already know the pros and cons on how to do it. XD
This is my experience from doing some of these things.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been to Dahub a year ago, and spent 100 points to get Watchers. It turned out that it was a horrible mistake, and I couldn't get a refund in the slightest. Nobody on there was an active/actual Watcher of mine. It turned out that the cookie crumbled really fast for me. And that's why I never used it again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For having friends to help me gain Watchers, this doesn't work very well for me.
My best friend REALLY wants me to have more Watchers. (Including active ones.) But everytime she tries to give me exposure and announce my projects to her Watchers/Fanbase, it just never works. It frustrates both of us, actually. I try to do the same to her, but that doesn't work well either.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for socializing, yeah about that. I'm not the most "Socially active" Artist out there to be perfectly honest. Not because I'm "Shy", but because of me finding difficulties in how to start conversations. Including someone who has fewer things in common then me. It's a struggle really. Most of the time, I'm either busy doing something, or I'm just in a lazy/slouchy mood to talk to people myself.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I agree, some of the options and especially dAhub aren't that great to gain watchers. But for your friend helping you out, this works the best if your friend and you draw things in the same category or have about the same total of watchers. But sometimes it doesn't work out, and yeah I agree that is pretty frustrating, but oh well. Atleast you tried ;w;
And thank you for saying!

The majority of my Watchers came from dAhub. She has about 200 more Watchers then me, from what I remembered.
But we don't always draw the same things. She's more of an anthro artist, and I'm a human artist. (Although she does draw it every now and then.)

Yeah that could be the problem. You should find someone who is also a human artist, because her watchers are for the biggest part not interested in human art if she is an anthro artist

This is pretty helpful.
I rarely give llamas (only when it's their birthday) and DAHub never works for me, but I'm still getting more followers through my art or interests.

Yay yay yay. I do enjoy reading all of your How to journals. I really agree on the spam faving and spam llamas. I mostly check their profile and see the comments and then suddenly I went to this person's favourites and it was all random. I got really annoyed by it. ugh. From now on I will not worry about the watch thingy and I will unwatch all artists that I feel obligated to (watch). Thank you thank you so much sanbei Nex

Oh my thank you so much! I am planning on making way more tutorials, don't worry about it! :33 If you have any good ideas feel free to propose them!
And exactly that, that specific thing really frustrates me as well! :00 And exactly, don't feel obligated to. Although be careful with unwatching too many, some really see it as insult.
And no problem friendo! ;w; <3

/dies of embarrassment
I didn't really know why would I be mentioned in something like this and though I would be more like the don't be like this one (like posting a lot of art and having a few favs and only commenting on own art replies and those things limited in my own account?)
never wondered I'd be in such example and now you got my shyness out
thnx
is this some kind of inverted-psychology way to get revenge of me shipping Noir x Sades?

Aww no really, you deserve some more watchers, I really think so!
And don't be shy about it ;w; You just deserve it!
And of course, it is my revenge. *insert evil laugh here*
No man I won't blame you for that, I mean they would be perfect for each other in like every way :00

Nexubis In reply to MelloFloyd [2017-05-29 12:36:12 +0000 UTC]
You do xD
And aww no they weren't xD Like if Sades would just accept his love Noir would be fine, and if Sades wouldn't be heart broken before and sent to jail and all he would be totally lovely! But now they would probably be like that yeah xD

wait, who is Joker and who is Harley
I'd say Noir is Joker and Sades is Harley, they both even have similar hairstyles (kinda)
Sades with ponytails is exactly the same as Harley!!

I have school around pretty long, like most of the time from about 8 to 4 or 5, and like I have an hour travel time :')
And oh Me and Mr Wolf I wanted to make a short animation with Noir and Sades on that but I keep forgetting that I can't animate :')

MelloFloyd In reply to Nexubis [2017-05-29 13:11:29 +0000 UTC]
hm I used to go from 8 to 14-15 (depending on the day and the grade, last year was always at 15 but one day at 14 and this year was the other way around)
and I'm saying "used to" because I've finished this grade and I have until the next week to prepare the University access tests
!! sounds interesting
and? you can't animate? like don't you know some about animation already? or for now you can only do simple animations?
