Tadaaah! My entry for Koai's "What If" contest: [link]

Note that I'm only learning to draw, so I know the proportions are all iffy. Actually, I wasn't gonna draw anything, but then I thought, what the heck, let's do it, just for fun! So here you go.

ETA: Replaced the original image for a colored one, using GIMP and my husbie's advice

Okay, so my "What if" scenario begins right after the following lines that occur on pages 120 ([link] ) and 121 ([link] )

"Sayde," Kheri called, trying to keep up with the young lioness. "do you fancy going for a walk somewhere with me tonight?"

"No," Sayde responded instantly. "Sorry, Kheri."

"Oh...are you sure? I don't really want to go home alone...come on Sayde, why not? You never know...we might have fun."

Sayde stopped for a moment and shook her head, letting out a deep, loud sigh. "Does it look like I'm the mood to have fun right now?" she said, looking a bit exasperated.

Kheri frowned slightly. "You keep misinterpreting me! You know? Never mind, sorry for trying to cheer you up a bit, after what you went through today..."

Sayde snorted slightly, looking at him, incredulous. "You? Trying to cheer me up? That'll be the day."

"Why is that so hard to believe? And what have you got against me anyway?"

Sayde had to bite her tongue. There were so many things she wanted to blurt out at him, starting with the way he treated the inmates, especially Kat, his suspicious appearance by the tunnel when Raz had gone missing, and the fact that he would just not leave her alone. But she had to play it cool. She had to make Kheri believe that she was clueless as to who had murdered Raz, so that she could find a way to expose him, just like Kat had asked her.

The lioness took a deep breath, staring at the ground, trying to calm herself. Maybe taking a walk with Kheri was not such a bad idea. She could try and get information from him, see if he contradicted himself somehow.

"Fine... Let's go..." she said softly, and Kheri followed, sporting a mean, little smile that faded from his face the moment Sayde looked up again.

They walked in silence for a couple of minutes, until Sayde asked, "I heard you went to investigate the tunnel yourself, after they had removed Raz's body... Did you find any clues as to who could have done this?"

Kheri shook his head. "No. I checked the area but there were no other smells I could identify over the smell of decay. Besides, it's been too long, I bet all prints and scent marks are faded by now."

Sayde remained quiet, so Kheri went on to add, "I also checked those boulders that were blocking the tunnel from the inside. I hadn't been down there in quite a while, but I can tell you, those rocks were definitely not there. I'm guessing one of the walls of the tunnel caved in at some point..."

"I guess," Sayde said, glancing at him every now and then, but Kheri had kept a serious expression, not giving anything away.

"Here's what I think happened. Raz tried to move those rocks, you know? See if she could push them, to try and get through... One of them must have rolled on top of her. I mean, I know this prison is full of whackos, but I just can't imagine someone actually having the strength to push such a big boulder on top of someone else."

Sayde nodded as she listened along, thinking that this kind of made sense.

Kheri glanced at her as he spoke, "If someone did it, then Inmate Raz must have been unconscious. She wouldn't have just lay there quietly while someone rolled that rock on top her... I bet she tried to defend herself before it got to that point. But none of the inmates or officers were sporting any unexplained wounds the day after... So maybe it was someone she trusted and who knocked her out cold before she knew what was going on."

Sayde glanced at Kheri once again, wondering, could he be innocent after all? Were Kat's suspicions of him simply based on the fact that she hated Kheri?

"What do you think?" Kheri asked her.

Sayde stared ahead, "I have no idea, I am more confused now that I was before... You've given me a lot to think about.

"Thanks for listening to me anyway," Kheri replied, "This was eating me and I really needed to get it out of my chest, and talk about it with someone."

The two lions continued walking, discussing a few other topics, such as Luja and Chakaa causing a lot of trouble lately in the Saba-Wing, until they reached the part of the road where they both had to part ways. They wished each other good night, but Sayde could not sleep a blink, wondering whether Kheri might be telling the truth after all.

The next morning, Sayde could tell that Kat had not slept very well either. She looked tired and groggy. But her eyes widened in shock when Sayde whispered for only her to hear, "Kat... There's something you need to know... I don't think Kheri did it after all... I spoke to him and--"

"Well if he didn't, then who did? Tell me, who else held such a big grudge against Raz?"

"I don't know, but I'm not about to set him up if he didn't commit the crime you're pinning on him. I'll have to wait and find out more..."

"Well, don't wait too long," Kat hissed, looking disappointed, "Because his next victim of murder could be me."
