Nick my friend I have to say...
This comic is a freaking masterpiece! You really know how to tell a story...
This deserves to be a tv show or movie I'm not joking!
I give this comic a 10/10!

I feel as if some sort of forewarning is in order here; this comment is NOT gonna' be a short one.
Dang.... Daaaaang. You know how to tell a story. From page one to the end, you had me captivated, fearing, and cheering the whole story through. Humor was brilliant, characters were alive, and all else was brimming with peril and adventure. This was a story I could not put down. From the time night fell, to the darkest hour, you have held my interest spectacularly so.
To tell a tale as moving and endearing as this one through art and literature is astounding. To have such willpower, determination, resolve... it is almost baffling and absolutely commendable. Setting out on this journey with Remus from the harsh, timeless sands of the desert, braving every danger Felarya has to offer, and finishing with a touching end has left me in awe and I can hardly express my adoration for this story. Your view of Felarya told from your characters' perspectives is mesmerizing, both beautiful and terrifying to behold. Honestly, I have to say I did not expect anything great when I first heard of your story, but I am delighted you've proved me wrong, and in such a grand display. Your art isn't to say the greatest, but your writing is phenomenal. Never have I read a comic with so much life in its characters. I suppose that's partly to blame on my part, as I tend to read novels more often, but still; compared to some other characters I know, Remus and Xanthe stand out amongst them. Upon finishing this adventure, I find myself wanting to read more of your works, keen to explore your methods of storytelling and character. Someday soon I just might, too. But after reading this marvelous tale through, I feel as if I need to take some time to just... soak it all in, per se. And that might take a while. There's a certain joy and sadness that comes from finishing a good story, ya'know? I just gotta' take some time to think on it, is all.
I'll finish this up real quick in a moment. I've just got one more thing to say.
What I find most impressive - aside from your excellent storytelling - is that you have clearly stated your disdain for vore, yet you took it upon yourself to venture into a world filled with - if not practically centered around - its voracious inhabitants. It brings another something to it, I should like to think. It's a different look at things in Karbo's world. And I find that to be the most engrossing aspect of this entire story. I suppose it's only natural for any human to enjoy a tale of survival, being it in our nature to outlast whatever we can, long as we can, but this altered image of Felarya helps to expose its true horrors and losses that other characters suffer. It's a bleak outlook, in a way, but that just makes it evermore enticing. All this time, we're routing for our heroes standing against those horrors, fearing for them as they're within those creatures' grasps, and they're not just disposable either. I sincerely cared for your characters and even dreaded many outcomes of various scenarios they became entangled in. It was exciting, so to say, and made for and amazing read.
And what an end it all came to. I had long guessed Remus' 'daughter' was dead, but that still didn't prepare me for that finale. This story was not at all what I expected - if I'd expected anything, really - yet it was something else. It was grand, it was a wonderful tale of survival, and it had heart. You poured yourself into this project and worked diligently to finish it, and you did. I know you're proud of it and you have every right to be. All I can say now is I seriously hope you've considered writing more stories and even strive to publish them. I've only read one, but of what I read, I am eager for more. It was excellent and I will not be forgetting this story anytime soon.
('Scuse any typos I may have left in my wake. Silver Scales has kept me up nearly all night - writing this comment adds to that - and I'm not as awake as I should be whilst writing all this. That, and I'm too lazy to edit this one.)
Anywho! Outstanding story. I'll definitely remember this one for a loooooong time.
Laters! : P

Hey there. Sorry to say, I can't reply to EVERYTHING in this comment at the moment (I'll try to, tonight), but I felt to need to address one thing... the art.
Yeah, my art, at the time of drawing this, wasn't very good. I can't even look back at this story and re-read it now, without making faces at it. I do have a Silver Scales 2 planned for someday, but whenever I get around to it, its going to be a radically different looking book.
Here's some more recent art to give you an idea.
Anyway, thanks for everything. I understand if you wanna take a break before jumping into anything else of mine, but I just wanted to set the record straight that, well.... my art doesn't looking like this anymore. I know it's still far from great, but I'm trying.
And yes, I do have a story in a world of my own in the works that I want to publish.

Oh, geez, I hope you didn't read that like I was dissin' on your art; it's actually pretty dang good for how much there is and - from what I've heard - how fast you cranked it all out. That, along with the story. Takes some serious dedication.
Anywho! Yeah, for sure; I'll probably get around to some of your other works eventually. Thing is, though, I'm not a huge fan of Felarya, myself, so I'm not exactly keen to jump back into that world anytime soon. BUT! That's just what's so incredible about Silver Scales, isn't it? I really enjoyed that story - writing and drawings - even though it was in Felarya. You really pulled somethin' off there. Gosh, I can't get over how much I admire your writing methods. So I might get around to some of your other work, some other time.
And as for your personal story you plan to have published, that's wonderful to hear. I assumed as much, but I was just satiating my own curiosity. I'll be havin' to keep an' eye out for your name, penname, whatever you choose to go by and pick it up, someday. You've got some great talent with writing. Actually, I'm extremely curious how you would go about describing a scene or telling a story with words alone. I'll probably have to snoop around your gallery for more of that, eh? XD Heh. I'll get around to it eventually. 'Til then, laters! : P

Not gonna write some long comment on how amazing this story was. Which it was. It actually caused EMOTIONS in that organ I should call a heart.
What I will do is give links to the two pieces of music I listen to while reading this. They sum it up enough:

And that wraps up my third time reading this story all the way through, which never seems to let go! I had actually "stumbled" upon this story whilst searching the archives of Felarya's Comics/Strips section and a few pages in act two caught my eye. It was when Xanthe and Remus were leaving the Fairy Pond when all of a sudden screams were heard in the distance whilst in mid-flight. It was coming from a small child Lucilya was holding in her hands. When Remus said, "You ate his parents," I went, "Oh. My. God." Xanthe then punched Lucilya in the stomach causing her to spit up. When I saw her fall apart, I was sitting in my chair going, "Holy S#!T!" From that moment on, I was hooked. I then went to the beginning and continued all the way to the end. I spent many a day pondering, wondering, and just plain sulking about Remus and Xanthe's situation. I had even cried on a couple of occasions (and this is coming from a 20+ year old fat man from Kentucky). You, you, you, are a truly gifted writer! This comic is absolutely flawless! I can't wait to see what's to come next! I probably will never forget this story as long as I'm still sane. This along with Frenchsnack's work has inspired me to come up with a few characters and stories of my own in the Felaryan world. Don't forget that I'm still going to do that voiceover thing I sent you a note about, it just may take me some time to get a few more resources together before I begin. Well, in the words of Remus, "Cheery bye, then!" Thanks for this awesome ride! I can't wait for whatever you come up with next (still reading Band of Blades, by the way)! Cheers!

Me either! I had realized that even though I can't find a good voice changing software, I still gotta a lot of effects I can work with in Adobe Audition. Since in the first act until Remus runs into Minnie (excluding the cactus dryad), there are mostly male voices that I can work with. My little brother volunteered to do some voices as well. He sings in a local band and knows how to properly project his voice, so I think that'll go smoothly. One of the characters I'm looking forward to doing is the, "shoulder demon." I don't know why, but I think he would just be a fun character to do. As I've said before, I'll let you know when I come up with something.
There has been something else I've been thinking about. When it comes to people arguing back to the predators and such, I wonder if this phrase comes to mind: "A person's a person no matter how small." Dr. Seuss said that in a book called, "Horton Hears a Who." It feels strange bringing Dr. Seuss into this, but I think it's appropriate, however, I do know that the predators don't feel that way about humans (well, most of them). Oh, well. Still, I loved the hell out of Cats and Dogs and I'm loving the hell out of Band of Blades! Both stories are utterly brilliant and every single character is very well developed and lovable! Maybe, I might come out with my own story someday. For now, I'll continue writing music and working with audio. Until, then, stay gold.

You have managed to immerse yourself in an entirely new world and write an amazing story full of action, comedy, romance, and characters that we all know and love while still creating your own amazing characters. A very long and fulfilling story with many locations to juggle around, while still keeping them geographically correct. You have made a Bad#$% hero and his slightly more Bad#$% true love who he found along the way. Not only is the writing and the whole story so amazing but you ILLUSTRATED THE ENTIRE THING AND PUMPED THE PAGES OUT AT AN ALARMING RATE. Altogether I'd say this is a great story for those new to Felarya. You sir Mr. Nick America are an amazing writer.

Oh....This was a rather enjoyable ride! ^^
You had plenty of nice, interesting characters, and further more, you showed off more of the lesser seen creatures and hybrids of Felarya! I loved seeing all the neat places Felarya had to offer! It felt like some sort of magical tourist trip XD! And, I do enjoy how you made Remus capable, instead of falling into the common "All humans are stupid and defenseless" trap! And I have to tell you, I loved Xanthe! You gave her a nice backstory, and how you showed us that she has weaknesses and makes mistakes....which, to be honest, we don't see these sort of weaknesses displayed in characters in this community. I liked all your neat character designs as well! They were very distinct and very nice to look at, which seems par-for-the-course for your art.
But, I have to say, you got a little wordy in a few parts. Which is funny, since you displayed many moments of subtlety in this comic, like when you showed Isham's back story in one dream sequence, which I found really nice. I think that the wordy moments may have arisen from Remus' inner monologues. It kind of looked like you wanted to show off other people's characters, which is nice, but it looked like you where writing a bio for each of these characters. I think you could have shown there characteristics instead of giving us text explaining them.
And, while the main plot was nicely done, the side stories just kind of....went away. People have mentioned the shoulder demon plot, and their thoughts on it, so I don't really need to touch on that one, but I also thought that whole thing with Magnus ended abruptly as well. You spent a good time building this encounter with magnus up, and after the fight....we just sort of wonders off. I can understand if he was originally supposed to be the villain and you decided to make Lugus the villain in order to make everything tied together, which is fine ^^! My complaints are kind of nitpicky, and didn't really detract that much from the overall enjoyment of the story!
On a final note.....how did you come up with the names for your characters XD? Seriously, this names are very original, which is nice, since Felyara has had problems with characters who share the same name.
Good job is all I have to say! You put good honest effort into this and it shows! Did it have a few ridiculous moments? Sure, but you made them work, and you followed other aspects of Felyara close enough to have those few instances not really matter. And I liked how you didn't go with the "lol everyone lives happily ever after, even though it contradicts the somber mood this story has had!" And instead offered a bittersweet ending, that was tragic, but also hopeful.
Thank you Nickin, for sharing this story with us! You are an inspiration to a good many people! Your the new guy who didn't really share a lot of the same views as the other members of the community, but in the end, showed a deep caring for the setting and offered us something wonderful! Heck, thanks to you, I might start to contribute the the community more!
π: 0 β©: 1
NickOnPlanetRipple In reply to Billyblue999 [2011-09-23 12:07:29 +0000 UTC]
Well, the shoulder demon wasn't really meant to eat up a big chunk of the story. His shenanegins were building up to that scene at Jadong lake. Believe it or not, angel Remus punching out demon Remus was SUPPOSED to be the climax of that side plot, and I'd hoped people would pick up on that and be satisfied with that punch ending it, but I guess it wasn't as effective a scene as I'd like it to be.
As for Magnus... He was never going to be the main villain, but I didn't expect the story to go on very long after the fight with him. That was going to a be penultimate battle NEAR the end of the story, and I'd expected them to just stop by the giant tree briefly, and get to the crimson woods quickly, but I found myself wanting to explore Felarya some more before this was over, for better or worse. I guess another part of it was that the main appeal of Silver Scales that attracted viewers in the beginning, the display of various bizarre animals and the places they live in, had been dissolved in favor of giant babes, and I felt I needed to get back to that, at least for a little while, to "make up" for leaving the critters out for as long as I did.
To come up with the character names, I did various things, though in the case of someone like Veldt, I thought "Hmmm, grass seems fitting for her", so I opened a thesaurus and looked up grass, and found the prettiest word to make a name out of, Veldt. Believe it or not, Remus and Xanthe are REAL names, though some like Greef and Booleege (which sounds like BULGE) I did make up just for giggles. XD I don't quite remember what inspired their character designs... I guess I just wanted their faces to be unusual, and as for Remus' mask, I wanted something mysterious, but quirky, and by no means threatening. I figured making a point of trying to make him badass would leave him a pretty unlikeable character, and wanted him to be funny and odd instead, so I hope the goggles reflected that. Suits like the F.O.O.D. (Fuck Off Or Die) armor were really just a bunch of shapes randomly slapped together in a heap that I HOPED would turn out okay.
As for the wordy bits.... I eventually realized that the comic WAS dragging on longer than I wanted it to, so I tried, with a few characters, to cover up in a measly few panels what otherwise might take up ten more pages. However, characters like Fiona and Terror who only appeared briefly will play a bigger, more involving role in whatever story I make next in Felarya, as I will make more room for them.
Everything that made this comic enjoyable... I have the community to thank. I've said this many times already, but I never get tired of saying it... With everything you people have been adding over the years, crafting this place into the spectacular escapist fantasy land it is, you've essentially created this humongous playground for me to explore, and crammed it full of all sorts of cool things for me to play with XD... So naturally, I had a lot of fun, and I'm glad this story shows it and that it was fun for others. I never imagined the Felarya community would love it as much as they did, but this has turned out better than I could've dreamed. I hope I've managed to contribute something of value to the setting that otherwise may never be there, and that I can do it again someday.

I AM going to make a Silver Scales sequel, in which Maroon, Ciel, Minnie and Apollo wind up in different parts of Felarya and must find their way back to each other in this world they all once knew but has become strange to them. Not gonna say anything about Lugus yet, but I don't want to retread the ground of the first story, and while Remus and Xanthe are part of the story, the main focus is Maroon and Ciel and so on.
