Description So, it's been a while, fellow watchers and watcherettes and what better way to return to the Gallery than bringing yet another illustration (actually a bit of a "warm-up gone too far") from MAD MAX: Fury Road?

I'm sure some of you may remember my previous homage to George Miller's masterpiece: And that came about a year ago when I'd just watched the trailer for the movie. Imagine how I felt after actually seeing it in all its glory?
By now most of you must've read how amazing the film is and I will add my voice to the choir. The landscape, the lighting, characterisation and action are all superb as expected. Tom Hardy makes for an amazing Max and what can I say about Charlize Theron's Furiosa? She's perfect and deserves all the praise she's getting for her performance. But there's a few other details that really caught my imagination and thus I decided to depict one of them.

There's a lot of soul to this film; not that it may be apparent for the folks that get caught just in explosions and the vehicle wrecking (which is awesome, of course!). If you look closely, there's hints of a very well-constructed universe through which Miller explores certain philosophical issues just as viscerally as he does the post -apocalyptic landscape.

"We are not things!" yells Angharad, The Splendid as she tries to flee the incarceration she's been subjected to by Immortan Joe. And it was that phrase, coupled with her relentlessness in defending her child through the desert escape that brought the character up in my list of fascinating details I had to draw. Seldom have I seen a pregnant woman in film do so many things with such dead-serious intent; usually, pregnant characters are just that. They serve as carriers of a child, but here, she's an integral part of the team, doing every bit as much as the rest. Which is true for many other pieces of the puzzle in this absolutely gorgeous masterpiece. Everyone has purpose.

One other thing that really caught my eye was the saturation of the colors. It was so refreshing to see a film depict the stark blue sky with such majesty as well as the sand and rust, that I wanted to give that feeling to this illustration too.

I hope you enjoy this comeback and hopefully I'll be able to post some more updates as I wrap up a lot of commissions and other bits this week.

Have a great week!

Nic.-

He did think himself very important, so it's not that far off an interpretation of his name.

Splendid.Β

Seeing it the second time, I better appreciated specialized roles of the women – particularly the wives – and the succession of the elder women by the younger.

Thank you very much, mate! I think it might be the sky that pops out more than usual. In my images, the sky tends to be more overcast and dark, due to the subject (grimdark and all that ). So I think having a pure blue sky might make this one feel a little bit brighter in comparison.

New favourite movie! WITNESS!
It also proves one of the virtues of Judge Dredd and 40k: grim darkness needs contrasted with color.

You're absolutely right on both counts, my friend! This film entered my top ten as easily as those cars roamed through the wasteland

And grim darkness does indeed work better with color; saturated, rusty, bold colors and splashes of red.

Ah I've been waiting for this.

it truly is a master piece of film making. The fact that George Miller is able to make the best film in the series after 30 years blows my mind. The cinematography, the practical effects, the design of everything, the efficiency of story telling and that soundtrack...10/10.

Thank you so much, Chad!

I think Miller had been mulling this story for so long that there was no chance he'd mess up. And he finally had the budget to realize his true vision for this post-apocalyptic world of his creation.

Speaking of Mad Max, when am I going to see a rendition from you of this awesome film?

This film is now the bench mark action film for me. Nothing I've seen even comes close to the level of insanity of the stunts in that film. I expected the car stuff to be balls to the wall amazing but I was also really impressed with the hand to hand stuff, especially the fight between Furiosa/the Wives vs Max/Nux. That was a really really well put together and performed piece of fighting. To top it all off it has quite a bit of narrative heft as well. By all accounts it was one hell of a hard and long shoot for the lads and ladies working on it and I'm so glad it's paid off for them.

I love your illustration here, you've really managed to capture the innate violance and cruelty in Joe as well as the gutsyness of Angharad. Love it. Will you be doing any more characters from the film?

Thank you very much for the compliments and thoughtful comment, Jamie!

I agree with your opinion of this film: it's grandiose for sure! The fight you mention is one of Miller's favorite scenes. He said that it was coreographed almost as if it was a dance.

There's definitely more coming from me about this film; in fact, I don't want to forget old Max in my illustrations so he might have to turn up soon

I'm glad Miller could turn you into a wasteland fan, like the rest of us, mate.

As for the accents, I actually think they're all over the place for a purpose. If civilisation is collapsed, then you would have more chances of population being a wide caleidoscope of cultural/social backgrounds, with some foreign aspects thrown in the mix too.

I'm going to see the movie this week.
I was a bit skeptic at first thinking it was your typical macho-dance-of-destruction kinda movie
(NOT that there's anythong wrong with that!), but now I'm becoming really curious, especially after reading more about Imperator Furiosa's character.

I only find it ironic...living in a desert...going to see a movie...mostly in the desert.
I thought movies are supposed to take you away from reality
