but I dunno, I can't shake it off that he gets really reaaally underestimated. Maybe because he acts like a dork

CuzImCoolBro I have to disagree. Yes underestimated he is, basically because I think he doesn't want to be what he was made to be. And yes he did kill when we first met him. But I disagree on the "just for kicks" part. If you think about it, you'll have to realize that Gabriel is not only the messanger and the Angel of christmas, he is also the Angel of judgement. And he does not kill innocents. He kills what Dean in Tell Tales calls dicks. Like a prof who uses his students for sex. Or a man who does experiments with animals. Things that are not right, but are not judged by the law. So he judges. I don't think it's "for kicks" at all. It's just kinda part of who he is and even down on earth he can't help but part of him still is that. I also think that the fact that he is the Angel of judgement is the reason why he ran away in the first place. Because it would have been his place to judge and condemn one side. And he couldn't do that to either of his brothers. So he ran away. I think with Gabriel it's not the question what he CAN do, it's actually the question, what he's WILLING to do.

Very well, I see your point. He goes a bit towards the extreme though in punishing people and giving lessons, and unlike most other angels, he doesn't have the excuse of being unused to their very different thought processes and emotions. However, being a soldier, because no matter how unmilitaristic he is, he is still a soldier, killing may just seem more natural to him, also adding into account that he did use to be a part of Heaven's society, whose forms of punishment were much more severe than humans', and he could be drawing from that. I guess I agree, and I retract my previous statement.

Yes he is. He still is a soldier, but he was never one to follow. The Archangels were created as leaders, so I'm pretty sure that's where his free will comes from. He actually was created that way, with the ability to decide for his own. And I have to agree, sometimes he goes to far with his lessons. But about the forms of Punishment: Never forget, that torture and death sentences were a legal form of punishment practically everywhere until not so far ago. And Gabriel is very, very old. Like... pre-earth old. People tend to forget just HOW much he must have seen already, they see him as the younger brother, but that doesn't change the fact, that he's the seventh oldest beeing in this whole world of Supernatural. (And I'm not even counting, that Raphael is dead and Death most likely too). His view of the world is still a little bit... antique, but well, you can't blame a beeing thats older than time itself for not thinking too modern xD

Yeah. The Angels of Supernatural take a long time to adjust to sudden changes. They're not as adaptable as humans. Archangels, being even older and designed for very specific purposes, find it even more difficult to change their ways, one of the reasons for them being so determined to start the apocolypse and have a fight between Licifer and Micheal. The only reason Gabriel can pass for human (or pagan god) is that he has been living among the humans and actually trying to appear more like them in order to hide for over 2,000 years. Even he was set on the fact that the apocolypse would happen, and nothing could change it. And yeah, Gabriel often gives the illusion of being about 30 years old (with the maturity of a teenager), but even when we know that yeah, sure, he's really old, but he's one of the youngest archangels though, we don't realize just how old. Even being the youngest archangel, he is literally billions of years old, which is a number human minds just can't really seem to register. He is a being of light, wrath, love, sound, and power beyond five suns packed behind one adorable face. Is he a complete fun-loving candy-munching dork who likes to pull pranks? Absolutely. But he is also a terrifying warrior and messenger of God who deals out justice and life lessons, and should 100% not be crossed.

I think that that's pretty natural. The longer you live, the longer the time that you have to get sure on who you are. So taken that you have lived for literally thousands and thousands of years and would have to change basically everything about yourself to adjust, that'd mean having to questions so many years of memories, that of course, that takes longer. We can see that even with humans: Elderly people don't tend to change as fastly as teenagers do. So of course angels hardly change, or they only do it when the pressure is really high. Cas changed a lot since fourth season. Even Gabe changed, though not as much, but he did, when he helped the Winchesters.
I absolutly agree on that stuff. Yeah he's fucking old and he may keep some childish behaviour and thoughts - which I think is the reason that he is not as crazy as his elder brothers - but he also has billions of years of experience. And I am pretty sure, that he has seen a hell of a lot of pain and grief. He must have basically watched his brothers break one by one. I mean, even Michael, who seems to be the most "sane" of the other archangels... you can't tell me, that he doesn't have a crack or two... and Raphael is supposed to be the healer! So, I think that's also why he ran away, because he couldn't bear watching that anymore, not only see his brothers fight. Which is I think why he reacts so pissed, when Dean says that he's "someone's bitch".
Yes Gabriel is just as much a warrior as his brothers are. Rememeber, Cas realizes that his power decreases as he's no longer connected to heaven. Now, Cas has only been out of heaven for a few years... Gabe hasn't been up there for at least two thousand years (he had to be up there once for the christmas stuff, but I think he was out before that already, he just got up that one time for some reason, maybe to please his dad and because he wanted to get to know Jesus... he's a pretty curious guy after all...). So, he wasn't there for a LONG time. But still, he's pretty powerful, don't you think? Powerful enough to just snap away an Cherub, which I think Cas was before the events of Swan Song, right?

I know this is a late comment, but this pic is just that awesome, and I actually agree with you. Because of his kind face that looks so much younger than the other angels, his love of candy, and his incredibly hilarious personality, many fans (including me) often forget that he is an archangel, heaven's most fierce and terrifying warriors. We like to picture him as a fun-loving, great-with-kids kinda guy, glossing over the fact that the first time we met Gabriel, he was killing innocent people FOR KICKS, something no other angel would do.

My goodness this is fantastic. Gabriel is my favourite of all the angels on Supernatural. And the fact that we never even glimpsed his true power; unlike Castiel, who when revealing himself to Dean we realised was some supernatural being. Lucifer, well, everyone's seen him in action, the same goes for almost every angel we encounter. Gabriel was (and still is) an archangel, meaning he's one of the most powerful creatures in creation, but we don't get to physically see any of it. It's implied, what with changing channels, and Castiel saying it was too powerful to be a trickster. But he was underestimated. He still has been.
That's why they should bring him back- so he can be shown as the powerful, god like creature he is.
But this is brilliant. One of my favourite pieces I've ever seen.

I love how it's so simple and understated. I love how when you click for the bigger version you have to scroll down past the wings to get to Gabriel; it really highlights the whole 'underestimated' thing you were going for. I love Gabriel's little smirk, and, guh, the lollipop!!
