My personal favorite of Lovecraft's many weird races! Their design is a healthy mixture of awesome and creepy, their power to swap bodies between any and all sentient creatures is a pretty unique concept that fits for a race that's into learning as much knowledge as it can, and they're one of the few (if only) races in The Cthulhu Mythos that isn't just apathetic towards humanity; at least, I believe they're not. Honestly, it makes me wonder what it'd be like to be inside one of these thing's bodies if I ever got body-swapped with one...
Great job on this, dude!Β Β

They're one of my favorite Races from Lovecraft's works.
I imagined the human race somehow making an alliance with them in a futuristic war of survival when the stars became right again and Cthulhu rose from slumber.Β
Epic artwork!

Mine, too, I've felt that there is more to the Yithians than most other mythos races... they're not just purely malicious or uncaring as so many seem to be.
thanks for the kind words!

Amidst all of of the Lovecraft horrors, there is something cute and appealing about the Ylth.
And also not of course. I'm just saying.

Yes they are. It seems we are in the minority. Most deviant do NOT find Yith cute, sexy, or even personable.

Like someone before me said: You can sense it's intelligence. A certain feeling that this creature, if it were to get it's claws on me, would probably user me in some utterly alien experiment. Well done indeed!

Thank you, I appreciate the comment!Β It can be tricky to communicate things like intelligence with beings so unlike ourselves.

I suppose when one is effectively immortal, a few centuries is really just a blink of the eye.

I think Lovecraft was one of the first writers to imagine intelligent beings that weren't at all humanoid. Here I like the mix of items: some of that gear looks like it belongs in an earthly machine shop, yet that glowing alien artifact is the focus. I like how you made the work, and that glow in the Yith's eyes says intelligence to me.

I used to think I was the only one who cared for them, which in part fed my interest to give them some more attention.Β I'm slowly discovering that there are quite a few others who also like their quirky design and intriguing back story.

So is this a swapped mind or is it a resident Yithian?

nightserpent In reply to SomeKindaSpy [2014-06-23 15:38:03 +0000 UTC]
Great question!Β No one has asked me that before, and now you have me wondering as well.Β It was a collectible card game (CCG) illustration, and the assignment description was quite simple- something along the lines of a Yithian scientist examining an alien artifact or doing some sort of experiment.Β Publishers will sometimes let the artist incorporate more into an image's story. as long as it also satisfies what they requested.Β When these paintings get reduced to the printed size (roughly 1.5x1") it can get more challenging to tell a complex story while also making sure that people can still read and understand the basic content.Β For simplicity's sake I would say it is a resident Yithian, though your evocative question now makes me wonder how this scene might differ if it was a swapped mind.Β Would the Yithian have human artifacts about it?Β That might get confused with a resident simply examining human artifacts.Β It sounds like an interesting challenge to communicate this idea, perhaps it would be more successful/possible with more than a CCG's space allotment.Β Thoughts??

Well, my personal thoughts were that maybe it was a mind that was swapped from another race from another time and/or part of the universe.

Very nice image, good colors and concepts. The Great Race was one of Lovecraft's least malevolent species, but they still treateed humans like convenient guinea pigs. The anatomy wasn't even theirs, but rather the cone shaped race they inhabited. At least they stopped the flying polyps for a while.
