Description My inspiration to start create in vector graphic was a CrisVector - UPD 26.8.2023

Ok what can I tell, it was the hardest work ever I made.
It's 100% gradient mesh work in Illustrator CS6.
Tools: selection & direct tool, transparency, rectangle tool, ellipse tool, eye drop and one million nerve cells.
Original file weight 65 MB. 130 hours of work between 01.11.12-27.03.13.
It was technical side, now about soul expenses
I started to draw it in the middle of my work with Gorillas niko4ka2484.deviantart.com/art…
as I decided that I just can't do one work and to waste my time.
So I started to draw Red Queen, my first thought was: "It's seems impossible, but I'll try".
I started drawing pearls on a corset, then the top part of sleeves, face, collar, eyes, hearts, crown, neck, hand and small details avoiding a corset and hair. But when i finished all small parts and get to hair my computer said to me:"no way I can't do it".
And every time I try to draw hair he was starting a hysterics, he refused to show the image in preview, just in outlines, he began to stammer and loudly to puff, refused to save the file in JPG and etc.
So I was compelled to create the separate file for hair and as a result separate file for a corset. When I started drawing hair I began to hate mesh tool, but when I started drawing a corset I damned that day when I started working in Illustrator.
But all the time I made hair & corset in my had was only one thought: "how I will stick together it in one file?"
Yesterday I finished my work and started to stick files together, guys I think that I have a lot of gray hair & my computer too Only to stick it together it takes something like 3 hours, and I can't use any other programs in computer. But when I started to save JPG - wow 45 minutes for one fa*** file))
But....my last thought was:"I really made it?!"

What you tell guys?

Certainly I see couple of mistakes, but now I just can't touch Illustrator & damn gradient mesh I need a brake))

Few parts of frame: niko4ka2484.deviantart.com/art…

In addition screen shoots of the process:nikalim.deviantart.com/art/Red…

Original photo was taken in Google at one of wallpapers stocks, some were here: www.google.co.il/search?q=red+…

PS: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DD!!!! Unbelievable, thank you very much I really appreciate it))) I am dancing here, wow,DD. THX

I want to explain that my purpose of this work was to check the limit of the mesh and to make this work not distinguishable from the original and I made it!
I found the limit, I know what exactly this tool limit & what he can't do, but shhhhh, don't tell to Adobe Testers))
I completely understand this tool, I don't insist that this work high art piece as artist, but process of doing it which was really improbable & good experience, was very interesting.
I really think that it was my last work with mesh tool. I will never ever involve myself to work like this, but I am glad that made it even if someone considers that it is asenselessly, not for me for 100%, once a life))
And by the way it is my 6 work in Illustrator at all, so maybe it's not so bad

Many thanks to those who understands complexity of process, I am grateful

I work with Adobe Illustrator too and damn, this is the kind of stuff I want to be able to do someday. I've never tried anything with the gradient mesh tool but I'll have to try at some point!

seen that already. still looks like the hair is a texture copy and pasted from the original. do u have actual process pics? u painting the hair and dress?

I have screen shoots of the process, but I don't sure that it can help u to understand that it vector drawing with out any copy/paste from original, if you after checking of outlines, can't believe it's all drawing.
I offer u to check on this site more works of professionals made with mesh tool in Illustrator.

id still like to see process shots. half of the red queen looks legit, and the other half where itd be hard to reproduce looks grainy and lower resolution as in its copied and pasted. now if u didnt just paste the textures over yur mesh then why is there any low resolution at all?

I never seen this kind of work come out of a vector graphic editor. This unbelievable! You defiantly deserve the DD and much more.

I have had a very hard time figuring out how to use the gradient mesh tool effectively. Do you have any tips or tutorial you have used to learn? Thanks!

Hi, thx. I can tell u that I learned this tool by hard way of trying & mistakes. To understand which shape u need for each part of drawing & how to build it correct. What I can offer to check some videos on Youtube. For example lesson of "basic shape" of Franky(one of DA members) can really help u, as I found it already after I learned this tool, I thought that pity I didn't find it in start of my way This video can help u to understand how to build mesh in correct shape:[link]
This video, can help u to understand how to move/change points and create the necessary forms up to u needs in drawings:[link]
After u can check all rest videos of Franky, how he create faces, hair and etc.:[link]

And his official page here on DA: [link]

Maybe one day I also will do video, as I have my one techniques But the way Franky do it is very similar to how I'm doing it

Good luck) Hope it will help u

Really? I guess I feel that way about my work too. It's really satisfying when you completely dive into your work and work out every little detail possible even if a lot of it doesn't really come out in the end product.

Packwood [2013-03-31 20:27:39 +0000 UTC]

Incredible! I'd be interesting to see a step by step tutorial for those of us who aren't that good at Illustrator, how you got every hair and every weave of the corset 100% exact to the original photo... with a gradient mesh now less. I'd say it'd be impossible for me to achieve that if I tried painting it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NikaLim In reply to Packwood [2013-04-02 08:57:45 +0000 UTC]

Are u kidding me, tutorial? Maybe after a loooong break I can handle a little tutorial with explanation of the hardest parts as hair & global understanding of mesh tool to do any work u want, but for now I'm really hate her and can't touch)))
