Description
It was too quiet in their clearing near the top of the range that morning. Something was wrong, and Asgareth knew it. He stood tall at the head of his herd, the dappled grey Sylchrome just behind him. She was strong and fierce at this time, and she had been his matriarch.

Together, they had led the herd slowly down from the cliff but without warning, and a violent scream, it was there. The black, cannibalistic monster, roaring from the darkness and spreading his shadows with him. He trapped the others as they tried to flee, wrapping them in tendrils of shadow as he pulled them down and held them tight, ready to kill them.

As the blood began to flow, the mad creature slaying everything in his sight, Sylchrome was trying to free the others. It was to no avail, and she looked up in horror to see the black creature setting his sights on her, his sinister eyes narrowing as he moved towards her, blood dripping from his muzzle and hooves as he walked towards her.

Asgareth leapt in front of her and took the violent blow from the Voyd, turning to Sylchrome and giving her a frantic look,

“Go, and do not look back!” He cried, commanding her. Sylchrome took one step back, and watched in horror as the black shadow sank his wicked teeth into the back of her love. She gave a horrendous cry, fear and agony wrenching through her as she forced herself to turn away. There was no stopping this demon, and she knew Asgareth would escape once he had managed to escape.

As she moved down, and out of sight, hiding amidst the trees, she heard a sharp whistle from up high. Sylchrome cantered swiftly across the forest floor, until she came to the edge and where she could look up to the cliff. There was her love, his back to the cliff, with the shadow demon facing him. He was bleeding badly, and his ear was torn open.

Asgareth was forced right to the edge, and he looked around, hoping Sylchrome was safe. She was the last remaining of his herd, and he wanted her to live. He tore his eyes back to the demon beast as it suddenly lunged at him, jaw open as wide as he could get. Asgareth took a final step backwards and felt the edge of the cliff crumbling beneath his hooves and he fell, his body falling backwards. His jaw opened wide as he let loose a startled call, tucking his hind legs up high and bringing his forelegs to the front.

The last thing that he saw was the gleaming madness of the murdered before him, before he began to plummet down towards the earth.

Sylchrome watched and saw this all in slow motion. She didn’t care for herself, she was watching her love die before her eyes, and it shattered her. She gave a loud cry, barely stopping herself from jumping off the edge of the cliff after him. With a heaviness in her heart, she managed to close her eyes and turn her head away. Asgareth was dead.

Sylchrome did not get the time to mourn. There was the sound of something snapping, and then the demon was upon her. Without knowing where she was going, Sylchrome panicked and ran, the shadow hot on her heels.

EDITED; Changed the picture a fair bit - played with blood all day, fixed it so I'm actually happy with it, and not just satiated! Mane & tail, more detail and change of lighting. Oh, and I did most of the blood and the new mane/tail in SAI <3 Love SAI!

This piece has a fair amount of blood on it, so I have given it a mature warning, and its a fairly gruesome idea as well, but its fitting to the story I want to portray; the story of Sylchrome, my dappled grey Andalusian mare, who is a shell of her former self now.

This is probably the longest I've worked on a piece before, too.

So much done on this; and it was fun, though it is a very sombre and sad scene. I listened to Globus's 'Wyatt Earth' a lot during the making of this, as well as their other songs for inspiration. That, along with suddenly realising a few things about detailing, has helped to break my art block

I'm going to do another piece after I finish my commissions for Sylchrome; she deserves it <3
