It's International Save The Vaquita Day! ISTV Day
Vaquitas are critically endangered- they currently are the most endangered
cetacean (and marine mammal) in the world. Their population was seen to
be dropping in the past years, but the matter has become too alarming
to ignore. In late 2016 there was believed to be only 30 of these small
porpoises left in the wild. However, it is quickly approaching the one-year
mark since that account. Who knows how many are really left out there?

The main reason Vaquita numbers have been decreasing stems from them
suffering as bycatch in illegal gill nets. Emergency conservation plans are
already in action as many scramble to get a hold on the animals' care and
whereabouts. The Mexican government has poured so much effort and
invested millions into their protection, however their numbers continue
to drop.

A sanctuary is undergoing development for care of the Vaquita through
these urgent times. Additionally, to implement a gill net fishing ban
funding requires great support. Emergency action plans will need
support from a "variety of funding sources, including donations from
the public, private organizations, and non-profit groups," according to
Vaquita CPR . Please consider donating today.

I remember over five years ago making a school project on this rare
species' situation. I know that is not the longest time to have known
the animal, but coming back to it over the past few months compelled me
stronger than any other endangered animal project I've considered
up to this point. Something about this little porpoise just feels close
to me, and I want to contribute to the awareness they so desperately
need. If I recall, there was believed to be around 100-200 remaining
at that time five years ago? With increasing efforts and awareness making
its rounds globally, I hope we can find a way to bring the unique Vaquita
back - if hope truly still stands for them.
