"Much like humans, Werewolf society has a long and rich history of internal folklore and myth. These myths and stories are passed down from one generation to the next verbally and more seldom in written or pictograph form. Some cave drawings have been discovered which seem to portray bipedal wolves chasing game with elaborately decorated moon cycles guiding the enactments. Unlike human myth written of werewolves depicting them as brutal human slayers, in werewolf myth the origins and historical hardships of werewolves are explored. Storytelling is a rich and sacred tradition in werewolf society with some tales being told exclusively when shifted into werewolf form while others are reserved for human retelling."

"The light of the headlamp wavers. The air is damp and foul; the very shape of the earth has shifted since last of paw trod the cavern. Flutes have gone silent, the drums thunder no more, the scent of burning myrrh smothered by the ages. Chipped away by creeping mold, a red wolf peers from the cold stone. Across thirty-five thousand years, a voice rises:
Rough and cool he feels the rock under the pad of his stroking paw. Fat paint flecks his fur and the smoldering flesh of spirits makes the lines dance and tremble, but as he puts the last touch to his masterwork the questions haunt him. Yet he is young, live in good health, beloved by all his tribe. But how long? He knows he will not live forever. The many ancestors have already gone before him, nameless, too many to recall. The youngest pups with no concern but play, soon they will be as him, and all too soon they as well gone. The thought claws cold in his breast, stirring wet behind his eyes. Who will be there to know how at all they lived, he and his kin? When he too lies in the earth, the dust of his bones consumed and his precious name uttered no more. He wonders, but he dares not hope.
He fills in the last spot: The red wolf complete at last, over the lunar wheel. His paw, warm and live, passes his thoughts unto the cavern wall. He has made himself a messenger, fearless, untiring, prepared to go where he cannot follow. He launches him on his journey.
"Please," he whispers. "Please, remember..."
The painted tongue is stilled."
