This is the only story I've read to legitimately make me set down the book and try to think about ANYTHING else for a few hours... it had a very lingering sense of horror. I mean, I love Poe. Poe is my favorite. but he never made me do that.

Have you ever read Lovecraft's Shadow Over Innsmouth? That is my favorite story by HPL, particularly the ending.
Regarding I've been thinking of writing a story to fill in the blanks in The Thing on the Doorstep telling the story of what happened between them when they went off together that caused him to be changed when they returned.
