Description Behold said surprise. This took me two months, but should have been one because I get distracted so easily. I basically used the map that comes with the game but used numerous sources for everything else since the game map is so vague. I also wrote the text around it myself, no sources used for that - just information gathered from gameplay. The Hold borders omg. I've never been so stressed in my LIFE - my brain decided to add those once everything else was done. :/ The colours are better in real life, a lot more subtle.

So, the concept of Skyrim belongs to Bethesda, but this rendering of the map and the text around it belongs to me. If you post this anywhere, please link back to my dA profile in your post ^^
I do not give permission for you to use this freely - please do not steal it, copy it, sell it, use it as a wallpaper, or print copies. It's special to me, and I am sharing it because I want other Skyrim fans to see it. Just because it's on the net does not give you the right to do what you want with it.

As a big fan of cartography for fictional places, it's no wonder that this artwork really appeals to me.

Starting with the picture itself, it's an incredible faithful recreation of the game's official map as it includes much of the terrain and general location quite accurately. Every river, mountain, city and regional border are replicated perfectly. So simply as a derivative work, it's nearly flawless.

The colouring works incredibly well in thuis picture, going from the green field of the plains to the more yellowy interpretation for the regions of Eastmarch, to the white pallets of the Northern territories. It's clear that the artist has given a great deal of though to the regional environment when considering the proper colours to use.

Moving onto the writing now and once again we have an incredibly faithful recreation of the known facts from the game. Each of the regions and cities displayed in the maps are describe with incredible levels of detail. Everything you'd need to know from the names of the leaders to the primary sources of income can be found in the various descriptions.

If I had to come up with one criticism, it's that some of the outlines seem somewhat untidy. I know it's not reasonable to expect a perfect picture, especially when this level of detail and information is being planned for it, but while I agree that the image is all-in-all great, that tiny detail keeps it from being perfect.

Overall it's clear that this work comes from someone with both a love of the source material and a wide-reaching level of knowledge for the world's lore. A work of both love and dedication and I give it high marks all the way.

Overall a very good map. I like the fact that he goes into detail about the realms and the significance of each. It has a good handmade look to it that goes well with the idea of a "medieval" map such as this one. There are lots of place listed on the map that are not listed on the map provided with the game. It provides a nice look at some of the areas that you wouldn't usually look into even in game. I actually used this map to find some places as I payed the game. The map can help a novice player find his way around the game easily, plus it has a lot more color than the in game map so you get a better idea of what you might expect to find lurking about.. All in all a well rounded map covering the basics of the realm of Skyrim and its regions.

You have to have a map when you are exploring.

I like the style of this a lot. There are some inaccuracies here and there, but when I think of maps of "medieval" fantasy worlds.....there SHOULD be some inaccuracy actually. I mean just look at real maps of medieval earth. Cartographers no idea where anything outside their own backyard was really at and half the time they were drawing stuff that was being described through second of third hand accounts.
Overall, This is one of the prettier and more aesthetically pleasing maps of Skyrim I have seen. Good work!

If I had to choose which of the holds I'd like to rule, I'd probably pick Haafingar. It's smaller, fewer people living there, one way in or out (not counting the sea). Seems like it'd be easier to manage.

It probably would be, although you wouldn't make much of a living, given the general state of living.

interesting, really good, but some of your details are a bit off, I believe. I think I saw in a tip that Whiterun, because of their strategic position, was the largest city in Skyrim. Also, I can tell that you did this from an imperial stand point because in Stormcloak Falkreath became of some importance

Ninzz-MiniGoth In reply to Spiritswriter123 [2012-02-19 15:40:10 +0000 UTC]

I think that Solitude is the biggest - but they might be about the same, I'm not sure. I wrote the information from a neutral POV, so Falkreath, in that case would be less important.

But anyway, only Bethesda could make it perfect, because they created Skyrim.

Ninzz-MiniGoth In reply to massivelyattacked [2012-02-12 21:17:12 +0000 UTC]

That's kind of what I was aiming for - I wanted it to look more artistic than functional, since Skyrim itself is a somewhat stylised place.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

massivelyattacked In reply to Ninzz-MiniGoth [2012-02-12 21:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Extremely stylized. All I can think of are the maps with the sea monsters that are drawn into places of unknown territory.

Love it. No wonder this took you two months...this is the secret project you've been working on, right?
