I'd have to say I like this. I'd also have to say I think your atmospheres are too thick. I dunno, maybe not. I'd like to see more story essence to it. Everything here is well done, and I dunno about adding anything, but I think you should expand the top and bottom areas to increase the negative space. That could do something on it's own, but then add some interesting clouding in the bottom and top, far away, I mean.

oh!thanks on this elaborate review of this one,you made great observations, and it seems you understand quite a lot about light and shadowing(wich i still lack).i wanted to use some soft colors here, not to repeat myself to much on both pieces, and as far as the shadowing,i didnt want to push it too much cause i had a hard time doing the texture of the planet(details of the cities) and it
when i added ,more shadows the detail kinnda choked,so...it nice to get comments like this one, thanks again for it!
and it was all done with photoshop, except the the
fractals wich were rendered in apophysis .cheers!

its really cool. i can see the similarity but if im honest i prefered your last piece. i think the up and down orientation looked better. i dont know why :/ but i think it did.
also although this piece is lovely, i cant help but compare it with the previous one. i think the ring around it and the many small planets look almost out of place :/. i think that although the previous one had areas which this one has improved on, the improvements although adding too it in one sense deduct from it in another. it lost the simplicity and focus of the previous piece where the focus was purely on the 2 beautiful and contrasting lights around an annonymous planet.
as you give the planet more and more unique features it deducts and draws the focus from the beautiful effects of light. this effect is also emphasized by the far paler colours in the light effects. this means they are - although still beautiful and far deser/swirlier than the previous - duller and less vivid.
*finds it hard to give constructive critisism to work that is beautiful lol. i have a tendancy to just see its beauty and think that it is good enough *
this piece is still beautiful, but i must say i prefered the first. i think the ring also looks a tad out of place. i get the feeling it is because its colour looks almost constant around the whole ring, despite the contrast of red and blue, and the storms of light that seem so close to it. i am not sure. im struggleing to comment lol.
i dont know what means you use to create this program, and you did say it was very difficult to do shadow, but i think if you want to maximise the contrast between the red and the blue light it it would be best to look back at the origional image and darken it around the planet and try to make it look realistic. this means the picture will be more dominated by the vivid colouration of the light, aswell as solving the problems of making the planet look more spherical and making the middle less bland (as it would be more of a transition between the red and blue, and also a depth cue to the shape of the planet).
had i photoshop on this pc i would give it a try shadowing it on that. it wouldnt be as good as anything you have done, but it does have tools that when used to the correct seetings could probably yeild a realistic looking shadowation on the planet.
still i think both pictures are definitely merit worthy. nice ones.

It'd be appreciated (but some of my images are rather large 1600x1200 --- and there is one that is MUCH larger...)
